The role
As a Vehicle Technician Trainer, you'll have a role that is out of the ordinary. You'll join a team of talented training professionals who deliver technical courses to military students of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME).


The Army boasts many types of vehicles, from tanks and quad bikes to HGVs and Land Rovers. Keeping them in good working order is the responsibility of the Vehicle Mechanics; the technical training our students receive at REME gives them the knowledge and confidence to tackle any engineering problem, enabling them to keep our vehicles on the road - even in extreme conditions.


Day-to-day, you’ll prepare relevant training material, where necessary collaborating with the Media and Graphics Department for input to create relevant Initial Trade Training material for delivering training.

  • Maintaining a Continuous Personal Development (CPD) portfolio in respect of new technologies and equipment, ensuring lesson plans and training sessions are developed in accordance with the approved Learner Specifications; Course specifications and Course Training Plans.
  • Review course material and content ensuring it is current and evolves to support equipment and technology advances, using the most appropriate training aids.
  • Assessment of trainees to include: creation of written examinations and progress test papers, creation of practical assessment / examination scenarios and continuous assessments. Marking of examination papers, setting and marking of course and homework and invigilation of examinations and assessments.
  • Ensuring trainee development through monitoring, feedback appraisal, discipline and training interventions, ensuring all supporting documentation are maintained and that any special trainee developmental needs or training delays are flagged to the Lead Trainer (LT).


This role is full time, 37 hours per week and is based on site at MOD Lyneham, Wiltshire, approximately 7 miles (11 km) north-east of Chippenham and 10 miles (16 km) south-west of Swindon.

Essential experience of the Vehicle Technician Trainer

  • Strong team player – ability to work with multiple internal and external stakeholders
  • Organised, great time management and proactive manner
  • Clear and effective communication – written and verbal
  • Workshop experience with proven diagnostic skills (Light vehicle or HGV), military leavers with vehicle inspection experience (HGV or armoured) would be beneficial as well but not essential.

Qualifications for the Vehicle Technician Trainer

  • Minimum City & Guilds Part 3/NVQ L3 or Apprenticeship in Engineering Maintenance (Heavy or Light automotive vehicle, plant machinery) or equivalent military qualifications, gained as Class1 REME Vehicle Mechanic or similar RN/RAF trade.
  • No previous training experience required as we will look to develop you into the role. Provided you can show the required level of technical experience and willingness to learn, then full training and funding will be provided to gain Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training during the probation period. Once gained the salary for this position will rise to £38, .
