Job Overview

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS) is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us.

Please see below for detailed job description of the role.

Please note, this vacancy is only open to internal applicants who are currently employed by UHS.

Main duties of the job

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Radiology Vascular Access Service for a Vascular Access Practitioner to join our team.

Our objective is to consistently deliver a safe and effective gold standard service to all patients who come through the doors of UHS and in contact with our service. We see both inpatients and outpatients for vascular access device placement, placing over a thousand PICCs and midlines per year.

We continue to receive great feedback from the Friends and Family Test survey and from staff, most recently from the intensive care units with the service providing interventions at the bedside using electrocardiography technology to confirm PICC tip position, reducing the need for a chest x-ray, therefore less exposure to radiation. Our ever-expanding service now means that often patients receive their PICC and midline on the day of referral.

We take pride that our team is recognised for our forward thinking and service development.

Working for our organisation

University Hospital Southampton is one of England's largest acute teaching Trusts, offering a wide range of learning and development opportunities to support your career aspirations.

Located on the south coast with an international airport and direct rail links to London, Southampton offers an ideal setting to live and work, with the New Forest, South Downs and Jurassic Coast.

We believe that using technology wisely shows strong time management and commitment to innovation. However, personalizing your recruitment application to highlight your unique skills and experiences is crucial. Relying too heavily on generic, AI-generated content instead of drawing from your own strengths and accomplishments may lead to your application being rejected if multiple candidates present identical or similar information.

At UHS we’re committed to providing a flexible working environment where possible. Whether you are balancing family, study, or your wellbeing with your career, we want to support you so you can help our patients.

At UHS, we proudly champion individuality, recognizing that outstanding care is only possible with a diverse, inclusive team. We’re committed to creating an anti-racist, anti-discriminatory environment where everyone feels valued, safe, and empowered to make a meaningful impact in our communities. We welcome applicants of all backgrounds, identities, and experiences to join us in building a healthcare community where everyone can belong, thrive, and contribute.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

What you’ll do

You will lead a team of 3 practitioners where you will work closely with the Interventional Radiologist. The aim of this role is to become an autonomous and expert practitioner in placing Central Venous Access Devices (Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters) and midlines for adult patients Trust wide. The Vascular Access Practitioner will be responsible for providing a high-quality holistic service for patients through assessment, insertion, co-ordination of service, vetting of referrals, organising the daily workload, and follow-up of medium to long term vascular access devices and troubleshoot complications. Also, the role includes providing expert advice to patients/carers, and formal and informal education/training to all levels of staff on catheter care and management and an enthusiasm for regularly reviewing policies and procedures and carrying out audits/research relating to vascular access. Furthermore, our service is a fullback to service within UHS; you will therefore be required to provide advice and support to the Oncology outpatient, Neurology and Vascular Access Teams when needed.

Our service runs Monday - Friday (8 - 4 Pm) with a plan to run lists at weekends to meet service demands in the future. We encourage flexible working to ensure that the service is covered every day of the week to meet patients' needs. There is support readily available when needed within the team, the radiology management team, interventional radiologists, nurses, radiographers and other health professions within the UHS family.

What we’re looking for

The successful applicant will be a dynamic adult nurse, operating department practitioner or radiographer who is motivated and adaptable. Experience of patient assessment and the ability to liaise with all members of the multi-disciplinary team is essential when making decisions relating to appropriate vascular access devices. On-going training and professional development will be encouraged. You+ will demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills with an ability to maintain attention to detail and rational thinking, even when working under pressure. You will need to be proactive and motivated to learn.
