Job Opportunity: Van Mechanic

Service Care Solutions has an exciting opportunity for a Van Mechanic to join a Local Authority client based in the Redditch and Bromsgrove area of the West Midlands.

Role Overview: Your core responsibility will be to maintain the council's fleet of tipper vehicles, including third-party and plant maintenance processes, ensuring efficiency, timeliness, and cost-effectiveness to meet service obligations.

Core Duties:

• Inspect, repair, and service a wide range of vehicles, small plant, and agricultural equipment such as refuse collection vehicles, sweepers, tippers, mowing equipment, small tractors, chainsaws, hedge cutters, strimmers, and blowers.
• Perform MOT tests and retests on class 4, 5, and 7 vehicles.
• Conduct taxi tests according to standards set by Bromsgrove and Redditch Councils.
• Navigate around Bromsgrove and Redditch districts to attend breakdowns, perform repairs, or facilitate vehicle recovery to the depot. Knowledge of Health and Safety procedures is essential.
• Work a split shift if required to meet service needs.
• Operate from either of the two workshops as needed.
• Cover periods of leave, sickness, bank holidays, and provide emergency support during winter maintenance and special events.
• Work flexibly, typically 37 hours per week, between 6:30 am and 6 pm, Monday to Friday.
• Train staff on minor repairs and monitor work standards.
• Handle customer enquiries and prioritize workload independently.
• Liaise with contractors when necessary.
• Drive vehicles up to 26 tonnes (LGV).

Candidate Requirements:

We seek a candidate with previous fleet mechanic experience who is self-motivated, able to work independently and within a team, and flexible to cover multiple depots.

• Experience with MIG welding, gas welding, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic diagnosis, repair, and maintenance.
• Knowledge of Ministry of Transport Vehicle Inspectorate Standards.
• Experience repairing small plant, mowers, cutters, drills, agricultural equipment, tractors, and similar machinery.
• Ability to plan and prioritize service workloads.
• Proficiency with IT systems, including spreadsheets and databases.
• Current full driving license and LGV Category C qualification.
• City and Guilds qualification or equivalent in vehicle, LGV, and HGV repair and maintenance.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Willingness to work at multiple depots (Redditch and Bromsgrove).
