Job description

Senior Manager - US/UK Cross Border

We are seeking a Senior Tax Manager to join our busy private client team. Our US/UK Cross Border team serves a diverse range of international high net worth individuals resident in the UK, along with family offices, private equity and hedge fund principals, and high-profile professional partnerships.

Our goal is to be trusted advisers, providing a broad range of tax advisory services, including tax return compliance, residence and domicile advice, transaction and reorganisation guidance, wealth optimisation from a tax perspective, and estate and succession planning. Given our predominantly international client base, experience working with non-domiciled individuals is essential.

The role involves compliance and advisory responsibilities, working closely with Directors and team members to assess complex situations, provide advice, and form technical opinions. This position offers opportunities for promotion to Director and beyond, with potential for secondments within EY.

The Opportunity

A Senior Tax Manager will manage a large, varied portfolio of clients with complex US and/or UK tax issues, ensuring exceptional client service from both compliance and advisory perspectives, and signing out most tax returns. The role includes managing staff, influencing their development, and embodying EY’s core values. Responsibility for billing and meeting financial targets also falls within this role.

Duties

  1. Manage allocated client portfolios, ensuring high service standards.
  2. Plan and delegate work efficiently.
  3. Lead billing processes and meet deadlines.
  4. Coordinate with Credit Control to ensure prompt invoice payments.
  5. Perform accurate and complex final reviews of tax work, minimizing risks.
  6. Sign out completed tax returns in consultation with senior staff.
  7. Possess sufficient knowledge of other tax areas (estate/gift, IHT, corporate) to involve appropriate experts.
  8. Support the development of junior staff and manage personnel issues with HR guidance.
  9. Ensure compliance work meets standards, minimizes risk, and provides excellent client service.
  10. Deliver exceptional client service, organizing and prompting to meet deadlines.
  11. Model appropriate behaviors reflecting EY’s values and maintain confidentiality.
  12. Work flexibly within the team, assisting colleagues to ensure operational efficiency.

Person Specification

  • Qualified member of the ATT and qualified to practice US tax (EA or CPA). CTA qualification is desirable.
  • Ability to work well under pressure.
  • Well-organized with at least 5 years of practice experience.

Proven Experience

  • Tax experience at a similar level within a practice.
  • High standard of client service experience, face-to-face and remotely.
  • Experience handling full range of client tax needs.
  • Experience managing billing and signing out US/UK tax returns.
  • Experience managing junior staff members.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Strong people management skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Numerical proficiency and financial data interpretation.
  • Sound IT skills.
  • Ability to build strong relationships with colleagues.
  • Persuasive skills with clients, with respectful pushback when necessary.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Supportive and collaborative attitude towards colleagues.
