Urology Lead Nurse - Band 8a (CW Site)

Main duties of the job

The Lead Nurse works with a high degree of independence and autonomy to provide care and treatment to patients within the specialty of Urology with some cross cover with Uro-oncology.

The Lead Nurse utilises advanced clinical judgment and decision making to manage complex clinical situations, formulate appropriate care plans and follow up as required throughout the patient's pathway.

The Lead Nurse is educated or working towards a Masters Level qualification and has ideally completed relevant practice competencies such as non-medical prescribing, physical assessment and advanced communication skills or working towards. Additionally, with specific reference to Urology be able to undertake or be willing to gain competency in flexible cystoscopy, prostate biopsy and urodynamic studies.

The role is proactive in pioneering and further advancing nursing/midwifery in response to challenging healthcare needs and advances in practice. The post is intended to provide improved outcomes for patients by improving clinical outcomes and the quality of the service.

You will also manage a team of urology nurse specialist.

Please note: Some roles may require weekend shifts at multiple sites.

Job responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities:

  1. Use advanced expertise and clinical skills to accurately assess individual needs of urology patients and to manage their care appropriately informed by evidence based practice or expert opinion
  2. Obtain a medical, surgical and urological history in a systematic manner, including physical, social, emotional, psychological and environmental factors
  3. Undertake appropriate urological physical examination as per protocols/guidelines
  4. Orders and interprets appropriate laboratory tests within agreed Trust and Directorate guidelines
  5. Distinguishes between normal and abnormal findings on history and physical examination and relates this to possible diagnosis/ differential diagnoses
  6. To make appropriate diagnoses and identify, plan, assess, implement and evaluate patient care and needs both independently and in collaboration with other members of the multi-professional team
  7. To undertake specialist procedures including flexible cystoscopy and prostate biopsy when appropriately trained and assessed within agreed Trust and Directorate guidelines/protocols
  8. To prescribe treatment as a Non-Medical Prescriber or utilising Patient Group Directions, as appropriate within Trust guidelines/protocols
  9. To participate in the Clinical Governance agenda as set by the Directorate and the Trust

Professional and Personal Responsibilities:

  1. To act as a role model and promote excellence in nursing practice as well as promoting professional and clinical nursing skills within the Directorate/Trust
  2. To be responsible for working within the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and all Trust and Directorate guidelines, with the ability to practice independently and with freedom to act as appropriate

Research/Audit Responsibilities:

  1. Critically evaluates research and audit findings and incorporates evidenced based practice into care of patients.
  2. Responsible for policy/protocol development and implementation within Urology and the Trust
  3. To initiate and undertake audit as appropriate either individually or as part of the multi-disciplinary team

Consultation/Collaboration Responsibilities:

  1. To provide specialist support, advice, share knowledge and expertise and act as a resource both within the Directorate and other agencies
  2. To establish and maintain links with other agencies outside the Directorate with relevance to the speciality
  3. To be able to recognise own professional/clinical limitations and to seek advice and support when required

Leadership/Management Responsibilities:

  1. Directly line manages the Clinical Nurse Specialists (Urology), providing all HR aspects e.g. PDR, sickness, annual leave etc.
