Job description
Overview

The Urology Department is looking for 2 enthusiastic, forward-thinking Consultants in Urology Surgery to join the team. We aim to invest in applicants who are motivated and dedicated to providing high standards of patient care and who prioritise personal and professional development while meeting the growing challenges of UK healthcare.

We have two hospital sites with fully equipped theatre facilities. Elective, acute and emergency theatre cases are undertaken at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and West Middlesex University Hospital. Outpatients clinics are provided at both hospitals. An Endoscopy Unit operates on both sites.

On-call commitments are currently 1:8, covering both Chelsea and Westminster Hospital site and West Middlesex University Hospital site with Middle Grade cover.

All applicants would ideally be on the GMC Specialist Register or within six months of obtaining their CCT award at the time of interview. If the applicant has specific competencies or interests in sub-specialty areas, this will be supported.

The Trust Board includes an independent Chair, Sir Thomas Hughes-Hallett, Executive Directors, and eight Non-Executive Directors. The Chief Executive is Mrs Lesley Watts and the Medical Director is Dr Roger Chinn. This post sits within the Division of Planned Care. The Directorate Clinical Director is a member of the Divisional Board. The Planned Care Department reports to the Hospital Director/Deputy COO on the Chelsea and Westminster site, and to the Divisional Director of Operations for Planned Care at the Chelsea/West Middlesex site. Clinical Directors are managerially accountable to the Divisional Director of Operations and professionally accountable to the Divisional Medical Director, working to mutually agreed corporate objectives.

We provide services from two main hospitals, Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and West Middlesex University Hospital, and clinics across London and the South-East. We employ over 6,000 staff and care for nearly one million people. Our hospitals provide full clinical services including maternity, emergency and children’s services, and we offer community-based services such as award-winning sexual health and HIV clinics.

We are investing in facilities, with around £10 million per year in estate improvements. We are currently spending £25 million on expanding adult and neonatal critical care facilities at Chelsea and Westminster and on redeveloping the children’s unit at West Middlesex, in partnership with CW+ and generous donors.

Role purpose and responsibilities

This post is to support the delivery of cancer pathways in line with national commissioning standards. The post holder will have the following duties:

  • Outpatient clinics
  • Diagnostic procedures e.g. flexible cystoscopy
  • Inpatient and day-case operating lists
  • Attendance at MDT meetings
  • Participation in audit and governance activities of the department
  • Ensure compliance with commissioning standards for patients presenting on a 2WW or 62-day cancer pathway through prompt diagnosis and treatment
  • Work with existing consultants and colleagues in management to meet NHS waiting-time targets
  • Support subspecialisation in the department by appropriate cross-referral to colleagues
  • Provide consultant care at an early stage to patients presenting to secondary care with presumed urological problems
  • Contribute to the care of inpatients, rotating responsibility with colleagues
  • Promote early and safe discharge of patients
  • Strong commitment to the organisation and delivery of training
  • Deliver outpatient clinics, diagnostic procedures and theatre lists to support the service

  • Develop and maintain the competencies required for the duties of the post

  • Research, teaching and training (as applicable); provide high quality teaching to medical undergraduates and other health care professionals
  • Act as clinical supervisor and appraiser as delegated to ensure external accreditation of training posts
  • Collaborate with academic and clinical colleagues to enhance translational research and audit portfolios, adhering to Research Governance
  • Ensure mandatory training is up to date
  • Participate in continuing professional development to stay aligned with medical advances
  • Contribute to study leave planning and related expenses per contract; undertake non-clinical training and development when required
Leadership, governance and development
  • Work with medical, nursing, other clinical and managerial colleagues to deliver high performance in clinical efficiency, quality outcomes, financial management, and operational efficiency
  • Ensure junior doctors’ hours are compliant with EWTD, New Deal and the 2016 Junior Doctors contract; manage leave and ensure appropriate cover
  • Recruitment and induction of junior medical staff as delegated; participate in annual job planning and appraisal of doctors in training
  • Participate in department meetings and team-building activities; provide leadership to clinical teams and contribute to national initiatives
  • Promote equality and manage diversity issues in training and service delivery
  • Represent the Trust at clinical networks and external meetings; attend departmental meetings as identified
Governance and clinical standards
  • Review clinical outcomes using benchmarking data; participate in clinical audit, incident reporting and implementation of actions
  • Ensure NICE, NSF, CNST and other national guidance is reviewed and implemented; ensure clinical guidelines are followed and updated
  • Model good infection control practices and adhere to Trust infection control measures
  • Report all clinical and non-clinical accidents or incidents promptly and cooperate with investigations
