Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Provide specialist nursing practice intervention so that the specific needs of individual patients/clients are addressed. Provide direct care as per job plan, working alongside the nursing staff in the clinical area—providing a visible and strong role model to ensure best practice.
  • Conduct independent nurse-led clinics for a variety of urological conditions that need monitoring/treatment or review post-surgery. Work autonomously within the parameters of their competencies to make decisions and adjustments to patient treatments in line with their needs. Tasks may include altering medication, requesting imaging and appropriate blood tests, as well as referring back to the consultant or other multidisciplinary members if further advice is needed.
  • To provide advice and support for all members of the multi-professional team in the care of patients undergoing diagnostic pathways with suspected urological cancer. To liaise closely with members of the multidisciplinary team so that patients with confirmed urology cancer experience a seamless, high-quality service.
  • To provide continence advice.
  • To provide guidance, support, advice, and counseling to patients and their family/carers along the patient’s pathway. To know when to refer on to other professionals for more specialist guidance, support, advice, and counseling.
  • To promote patients’ autonomy through education and support so that the individual is able to make informed choices about their own care.
  • To act as the patient’s advocate when required and liaise with the multidisciplinary team as necessary.
  • To act as a role model of expert clinical practice, empowering others through effective role modeling, teaching, and team working.
  • To develop guidelines and protocols to deliver comprehensive evidence-based service for patients.
  • To recognize opportunities within the urology service for further development and expansion, to facilitate and manage change within defined clinical and organizational boundaries.
  • Working as an integral part of the multidisciplinary team to develop the service and appropriate referrals. To develop effective working relationships with all other departments resulting in effective coordinated care for clients, with all other local, regional, and national organizations.
  • To be able to work both individually and as part of the multidisciplinary team. Case manage a team of patients in partnership with the multi-professional team.
  • To set, monitor, and review standards on a regular basis in accordance with clinical governance “essence of care” benchmarks and the NHS plan. To liaise with MDT and Matron regarding leading on patient satisfaction surveys and present findings at Clinical Governance and other appropriate meetings.
  • To be able to lead on developing integrated care pathways and nursing care pathways in liaison with members of the multidisciplinary team.
