We are recruiting for a Urology Clinical Nurse Specialist - Benign who shares our ambition and vision to deliver the Best of Care by the Best People and have the drive to take us forward, ensuring that the Trust continues to be the first choice for patients and staff.

The Medway NHS Foundation Trust is the West Kent Urology Cancer/Benign Centre, serving a diverse population of over 700,000. The Urology Department offers a variety of services to the local urology population and aims to develop and expand these services to meet growing needs. This job description outlines the main responsibilities of the post, but duties may change and develop over time, and this description may be amended in consultation with the post holder.

Main duties of the job
  • Assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating nursing care, utilizing research findings as appropriate.
  • Supporting, advising, and teaching catheter care for patients with long-term indwelling catheters.
  • Providing additional assessment and performing uroflowmetry and bladder scanning. Assisting with, performing, interpreting, and planning care for specialist investigations such as Urodynamics Study and PTNS within role expectations.
  • Teaching patients and carers intermittent self-catheterisation and self-dilatation.
  • Providing a one-stop assessment for patients referred with lower urinary tract symptoms, trial without a catheter, urinary retention, or as walk-in patients to the clinic.
  • Initiating or participating in clinical audit/research projects and urology presentations. Setting up new nurse-led urology clinics to benefit patients and the department.
  • Liaising with the multidisciplinary team to provide efficient and effective care that meets service needs.

Job responsibilities

The CNS will work autonomously and as a key member of the multidisciplinary Urology team to provide high standards of care for patients with benign urological conditions.

Responsibilities include overseeing outpatient urology services, supporting the Emergency Department, supervising and mentoring junior staff, and participating in teaching, audits, and research. The post holder will develop expertise in support, follow-up, and advanced assessment in benign urology pathways.

The role involves planning and organizing caseloads, developing organizational and clinical skills, and completing competencies for nurse-led clinics such as telephone clinics, TWOC, CISD/CISC clinics, bladder instillations, female continence clinics, PTNS, UDS, catheter clinics, erectile dysfunction clinics, and BCG/Mitomycin clinics, with potential progression to Band 7 within two years.

The post includes performing urological procedures, providing treatment, diagnosing, and planning care, as well as offering emotional and informational support to patients and families affected by benign and cancerous urological conditions.
