Contract Type: 3–6 months (with possible extension)
The Role:
I’m working on behalf of a forward-thinking Cambridge-area company, looking for a hands-on technican to help with the build, testing, and troubleshooting of their exciting new products. It’s an ideal short-term contract for someone with a blend of electro-mechanical and optical experience, working across cable work, PCB assembly, full system builds, and optical alignment in a clean-handling environment.
Key responsibilities include:

  • Assembling and testing mechanical, optical, and electronic sub-assemblies—including cable harnesses to full system builds
  • Performing component-level fault finding, debugging, and recording results
  • Using your soldering and PCB repair skills (SMT down to 0201) and wiring/cable assembly abilities
  • Working with test kit such as oscilloscopes, DVMs, signal generators, and reading schematics
  • Operating in clean-handling or quasi-clean room conditions for opto-mechanical assembly
We’d love to hear from you if you have:
  • A formal engineering or relevant technical qualification
  • Strong understanding of electronics, good fault-finding and debugging instincts
  • SMT soldering, component-level PCB repair, wiring and harness assembly experience
  • Proficiency with test gear (oscilloscope, DVM, signal generator, etc.) and schematic reading
  • Computer literacy, plus some familiarity with PCB design tools and basic mechanical CAD (e.g., SolidWorks)
  • A basic grasp of analogue/digital video processing (desirable)
  • An understanding of clean/controlled handling for opto-mechanical assembly
Nice-to-haves (not essential):
  • Previous work with infrared/thermal imaging or night-vision systems
  • Any post-qualification experience in cleanspace or optics-heavy production environments
The offer:
  • Contract length: 3–6 months, with scope for extension if needed
  • On-site 5 day's a week (just north of Cambridge); you should be within about an hour’s commute
  • Competitive day rate, negotiable based on your experience
