Job Description:

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is one of the largest healthcare systems in the UK employing around 40,000 staff in a wide range of clinical and non-clinical professions and job roles. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health care services to a population of over 1.15 million and a wider population of 2.2 million when our regional and national services are included.

CMHACS is a new and comprehensive service to provide mental health care, treatment and support as a safe and effective alternative to hospital admission or prolonged inpatient stay. The service is being developed as part of a comprehensive review and reconfiguration of all mental health unscheduled care services across NHS GGC. The core functions of the CMHACS will be to offer short term intensive community based treatment as an effective alternative to hospital admission.
The Consultant Psychiatrist in Unscheduled Care will provide clinical leadership during normal working hours to the CMHACS team and contribute to strategic development and ongoing development of the service and redesign as required to meet the needs of the care group (1 PA). The clinical responsibilities will include holding RMO responsibility for Adult Mental Health patients on the CMHACS caseload who are subject to compulsory measures under the Mental Health (Care and Treatment) (Scotland) Act 2003. Assessment and review of patients, delegating responsibility to any Specialty Doctor working within the service, and supervising any resident medical staff attached to the team as per Royal College of Psychiatrists guidelines. Leading the CMHACS daily (Monday-Friday) multidisciplinary team meetings. Responsibility for prescribing psychiatric medication to individuals under the care of the CMHACS team and for supervising non-medical prescribers within the team and consider the physical health of individuals under their care and liaison with GPs/specialists as appropriate.
In addition there is an expectation they will participate in an out of hours on-call rota (1:25), Participation in the postgraduate teaching and supervision of medical staff and staff of other disciplines will also be encouraged. It is expected that the successful candidate will take part in continuing professional development. Participation in or research is encouraged. Hours of work will be standard non-premium hours but are subject to negotiation.
