Overview

University Secretary - Director of Governance

Location: Potters Bar (occasional travel to additional site). Job Type: 6-month Fixed Term Contract or permanent. Salary: £75,000 - £85,000 PA. Start Date: October / November 2025 (TBC). Hours: 35 hours per week (occasional overtime required).

My client seeks a dedicated Governance and Compliance Lead to oversee Governance, Data Protection, and Legal Service Delivery. This pivotal role involves supporting the Chair of Council and subcommittees, ensuring effective administration, logistics, and information flows. The successful candidate will enhance governance and regulatory frameworks, acting as a key contact and leading on information governance and compliance.

Day-to-day of the role
  • Lead the Governance Team in supporting Council and subcommittees.
  • Ensure integrity and transparency in governance activities, aligned with Nolan Principles.
  • Manage team budget and ensure value for money.
  • Liaise with Council and co-opted members, managing recruitment and induction.
  • Serve as Secretary to affiliated committees.
  • Design and manage risk processes and reporting.
  • Support CFO with internal audit and action tracker.
  • Oversee legal service delivery.
  • Promote collaboration, innovation, and accountability.
Required Skills & Qualifications
  • Degree-level qualification (or equivalent).
  • Senior-level experience, ideally in Higher Education governance.
  • Strong understanding of regulatory frameworks and compliance.
  • Experience as Data Protection Officer or deep knowledge of GDPR.
  • Knowledge of policies, legal frameworks, and constitutional matters in Higher Education.
  • Experience in institutional planning/reporting.
  • Proven leadership and team mentoring.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Flexible work approach.
Desirable Criteria
  • Advanced degree in Law, Business Administration, or related field.
  • Certifications in governance, risk, compliance, or data protection.
  • Experience in change management.
  • Ability to conduct and interpret governance research.
  • Additional language proficiency.
  • Strong public speaking and Higher Education network.
