About the role

At NFU Mutual, we’re on an exciting journey to transform our underwriting capability – and this role will play a key part in shaping what that looks like. You’ll help design and deliver future-ready underwriting solutions that bring together people, processes and technology to support smarter decisions and better outcomes.

Sitting at the heart of our Head Office Underwriting team, you’ll working closely with colleagues across change, IT, and the business to shape and deliver technology roadmaps that support our strategy. From workbench tools and AI-enabled solutions to our policy systems, you’ll help make sure our platforms are aligned to business needs and set up for the future. You’ll also play a part in defining and prioritising requirements, feeding into decisions around architecture and design, and supporting local delivery of change.

But the role goes beyond technology. You’ll also be involved in how we embed new capabilities, improve our ways of working, and uplift underwriting skills across the function. You’ll work across a mix of local and enterprise-level initiatives, contributing to conversations around risk appetite, pricing, and process improvement – all with a strong focus on commercial value.

It’s a collaborative and varied role where you’ll engage with a wide range of stakeholders – including senior leaders and external partners – and bring insight from the wider market to help shape what comes next. If you're someone who enjoys connecting the dots, solving problems, and helping teams deliver meaningful change, this is a great opportunity to make your mark.

About you

You’ll bring a strong blend of strategic thinking, commercial awareness, and hands-on delivery to this role - combining a deep understanding of underwriting with the ability to shape and implement future-facing solutions. Whether it's driving digital transformation, leading change, or influencing senior stakeholders, you're confident operating at pace and with purpose in a change-driven environment.

We’re looking for someone who can bridge the gap between underwriting expertise and innovation - someone who can translate big-picture goals into practical, value-adding outcomes.

You’ll thrive in this role if you have:

  • An understanding of underwriting, ideally in Commercial Lines - You don’t need to be a technical expert, but some grounding in underwriting – and how decisions impact customers and risk – will help you hit the ground running.
  • Confidence in project or change environments - You’re organised, comfortable juggling priorities, and able to bring structure to change – even when things feel a bit ambiguous. You can connect the dots, work collaboratively, and help move projects forward with clarity and focus.
  • An interest in digital and system-led change - You’re curious about how technology can improve underwriting and have ideally been involved in projects that introduced new tools or platforms. You understand how systems support better ways of working and are open to the role data, automation and digital solutions play in driving better decisions.
  • A collaborative and solution-focused approach – You’re great at building relationships, working with different teams, and finding practical ways to turn ideas into action.
  • The ability to influence and engage others - You’re a good communicator who can help bring others on the journey – whether that’s shaping a requirement, supporting a process change, or sharing insight from the market.
  • A forward-thinking and innovative mindset – You enjoy looking ahead, spotting opportunities to do things differently, and suggesting ways to improve. You’re naturally curious, open to fresh ideas, and motivated by change that brings long-term value.

At NFU Mutual, we support an inclusive workplace and value all the differences that make us unique. We celebrate the creativity and innovation that comes from diverse perspectives and experiences and share a common vision of doing the right thing for our customers and employees.

We recognise that some candidates may experience barriers during the recruitment process. So, we encourage candidates to discuss any adjustments or accommodations they need to be the best they can be throughout our recruitment process.

We're proud to be a Disability Confident Employer, a Race at Work and Women in Finance Charter signatory and welcome applications from people of all backgrounds, regardless of age, ethnicity, disability, neurodiversity, gender, religion, marital status, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic background.
