Job Description

The Role (FTC - 12 months)


The role of Underwriter, Underwriting & Claims Services, Protection, Europe is to provide high quality underwriting assessments and support key underwriting and claims related activities within the underwriting and claims team in the Europe region.


As an Underwriter you will be working closely with the Manager, Underwriting & Claims Services, Protection, Europe & North America to develop and implement an underwriting and claims proposition that meets both client needs as well as being consistent with PL Re’s strategic focus.


Additionally, as an Underwriter, you will be expected to assist with the management of a portfolio of insurance and UnderwriteMe partner clients.

Client Referrals

  • Provide high-quality assessments of client referrals in line with agreed risk philosophies, exercising judgment to ensure work is conducted within SLAs.
  • Continuously challenge current practices and improve processes and documentation.
  • Leverage all aspects of Chorus, including portal and cross-regional working, to further optimise underwriting and claims activities.


Internal Governance, Training, System Enhancement, Ocean Development

  • Maintain awareness and understanding of relevant regulatory changes and their impacts on the insurance and reinsurance markets.
  • Maintain knowledge of and contribute to the regular maintenance of risk management policies.
  • Identify role-relevant knowledge gaps within the team and deliver appropriate training to ensure all identified gaps are fully addressed, resulting in a more skilled and knowledgeable team.
  • Lead or serve as SME for Chorus, with responsibility for continuous efficiency gains and user testing of new functionality.
  • Support Ocean development work, including client engagement regarding risk philosophy changes and client-requested enhancements.
  • Provide informal and formal mentoring/training to develop team members and may supervise the work of others.


Client Auditing and UnderwriteMe Rules Auditing

  • Audits plans are developed and audits conducted accordingly, including providing support for client activities such as quote due diligence and new client onboarding.
  • Participate in, lead, or approve external audits, including the preparation and execution of reports, and the tracking and completion of audit actions. Audit actions include the review and planning of future audits, case referral criteria, cedant authorities, and other related activities.
  • • UnderwriteMe rules are audited to ensure alignment with risk philosophies and to identify opportunities for improving STA and/or risk selection.

Client Engagement and Training

  • Utilise our deep understanding of clients' businesses and market differentiators to enhance relationships through engagement and training, ensuring client loyalty and satisfaction. Leverage this knowledge to strengthen client partnerships, positioning PL Re as market leaders.


Qualifications & Experience

  • Proven experience working in a life underwriting and claims department in an insurance (or preferably) a reinsurance company environment at a senior level.
  • Experience handling underwriting for all major products.
  • Competent user status for MS Word, MS Excel and MS Outlook or similar e-mail product.
  • Good working knowledge of Life insurance industry regulations.
