Job description

We are looking for an Underwriter to work within our Marine Liability Team based in London.

Position Summary

Under broad supervision, responsible for underwriting risks in the Marine Liability portfolio, including P&I and Ports & Terminals. Works within authority to underwrite renewals and new business.

Key Responsibilities

  • Reviews applications and financial requirements for risks requiring technical underwriting skills.
  • Determines acceptability of risk according to company guidelines and standards.
  • Recommends appropriate pricing and coverage modifications or enhancements after analysis of documentation, business factors, and market conditions.
  • Prepares quotations and responds to inquiries from Brokers and internal/external contacts, escalating issues as necessary.
  • Prepares written communications for underwriting decisions, rate appeals, and declinations; verbally notifying Brokers when appropriate.
  • Analyzes risk quality, quantity, and profitability; prepares reports for management review.
  • Assists in marketing products and services, including field visits.
  • Utilizes underwriting policies, rating manuals, and relevant laws and regulations.
  • Develops and maintains positive Broker relationships.
  • Maintains current knowledge on regulatory issues and industry trends.
  • Works with senior underwriters or management on risks exceeding authority or requiring special handling.
  • Develops proficiency in CNA systems and updates underwriting systems.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.
