Healthcare Underwriter - Manchester

We are seeking to hire a healthcare underwriter to join our Manchester office. The role will focus mainly on Healthcare package business, including medical malpractice, PL & EL, servicing all UK regional locations outside of London, and covering both new and existing business.

The role will work under broad supervision, responsible for underwriting risks in a book of business. It involves working within limited authority on assignments of moderate technical complexity, utilizing underwriting policies, rating manual rules, and insurance laws and regulations.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Review applications and financial requirements for risks requiring technical underwriting skills.
  2. Determine acceptability of risks in accordance with company guidelines and standards.
  3. Recommend appropriate pricing and coverage modifications or enhancements after complete analysis of applicant documentation, business factors, and competitive situations.
  4. Prepare quotations and respond to questions from Brokers, internal and external contacts, escalating issues as necessary.
  5. Communicate adverse underwriting decisions, rate appeals, requirements, status, and declinations in writing, and notify Brokers verbally where appropriate to ensure clear understanding.
  6. Analyze the quality, quantity, and profitability of risks underwritten and prepare management reports.
  7. Assist in marketing products and services through the brokerage community and conduct field visits.
  8. Develop and maintain positive Broker relationships.
  9. Stay current on state/territory issues, regulations, and trends.
  10. Collaborate with senior underwriters or management on risks exceeding authority or requiring special handling.
  11. Develop proficiency in all relevant CNA systems and update underwriting systems as needed.
  12. Perform additional duties as assigned.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

  • At least 3 years of experience in Healthcare, either in underwriting or broking.
  • Knowledge of the Healthcare/Medical Malpractice market and products.
  • Developing technical expertise and negotiation skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to interact effectively with peer-level CNA internal and external partners.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and make sound business decisions.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and other relevant business software.
