Underwriter

The Central Underwriting teams are located throughout the UK, mainly in our regional central underwriting hubs including Glasgow, Colchester, and York. The team forms part of Hiscox UK’s central operations function and is responsible for the technical underwriting of new business and renewals across our broker business.

You’ll focus on underwriting existing business for our commercial policies. The role offers a breadth of development opportunities, exposure to our products, state-of-the-art underwriting platform, and underwriting strategy to help you progress into a senior underwriter role.

What you’ll be doing:

1. You’ll underwrite our commercial products in line with our high standards.
2. Work towards set targets each month, including profitability, conversion, and productivity.
3. Develop your sales skills and understanding of sales and underwriting strategy in collaboration with wider teams and regions.
4. Negotiate effectively with internal and external parties, including brokers.
5. Challenge non-standard underwriting decisions by leveraging the expertise of product specialists and underwriting managers.
6. Identify process improvements to enhance customer experience and drive profitable growth through innovation.

Our must-haves:

• Minimum of 2 years’ experience as a commercial lines underwriter, with knowledge of Professional Indemnity; exposure to Management Liability and Cyber insurance is advantageous.
• A logical and analytical thinker.
• An excellent communicator, capable of presenting and articulating ideas clearly.
• A natural relationship builder, able to develop rapport with brokers.
• Ambassadorial qualities, demonstrating dedication and going the extra mile in a fast-paced, demanding environment.
• Ambitious, driven, self-motivated, and results-oriented.
• Degree-qualified or working towards Diploma CII, or exempt through relevant FCA-approved experience.
