Role Purpose:

The UK Tax Manager plays a critical role in ensuring the Group's full compliance with all UK tax obligations, including accurate and timely tax reporting, filing, and payments. Acting as the key subject matter expert on UK tax matters, the role is responsible for managing end-to-end UK corporate tax compliance and reporting processes, supporting statutory and group financial reporting requirements, and managing the delivery of UK tax advice to the business.

The UK Tax Manager will be crucial in managing ongoing advisory and compliance fees as will enable the Group to insource our Pillar II obligations.

This role is essential to safeguarding the Group’s tax risk profile in the UK, optimizing tax positions where appropriate, and maintaining constructive relationships with HMRC. As a pivotal link between finance, commercial teams, and external advisors, the UK Tax Manager ensures tax considerations are embedded in business decisions and transactions, protecting value and enabling the Group’s continued growth in a complex and evolving UK tax landscape.

Key Responsibilities:

Manage UK Corporation Tax Compliance

  • Ensure timely preparation, review, and filing of UK corporation tax returns, including liaison with outsource service providers and finance teams, to enable us to meet our UK compliance obligations
  • Ensure timely assessment and completion of UK tax claims e.g. R&D, including liaison with outsource service providers and local business teams, to enable us to optimise our UK filing position
  • Ensure complete and accurate preparation of all other UK tax attributes e.g. corporate interest restriction calculations, CFC analysis, group relief, group allocation allowance etc.
  • Ensure timely and accurate CT payments and refunds , including calculation and payment of UK corporation tax payments on a quarterly basis, and monitoring and chasing RDEC refunds on an annual basis, to enable management of our UK cash tax position
  • Support the business with UK CT queries, including liaison with any third party advisers as required, to enable decision-making that incorporates tax considerations

Manage WHT Compliance

  • Ensure timely support to the business in the provision of UK certificates of tax residence, to enable timely intercompany repatriation of funds. This includes the preparation of any relevant WHT forms e.g. R185s
  • Ensure timely and accurate preparation, review and filing of UK WHT returns e.g. CT61s, including payment of UK WHT payments on a quarterly basis
  • Support the monitoring and management of UK Double Taxation Treaty Passport Scheme compliance for internal and external loans
  • Support the Tax Leadership Team with Double Tax Treaty research and Double Tax Relief claims, and general optimisation and review of applicable WHT rates and reliefs

Manage UK CT and WHT Reporting

  • Ensure accurate preparation and review of UK legal entity statutory tax disclosures, liaising with finance to support with any audit queries, to enable us to meet our UK statutory reporting obligations
  • Ensure complete and accurate accounting for RDEC, to enable us to optimise our ‘above the line’ profit
  • Ensure timely and accurate preparation and review of the annual tax reporting schedules required for year-end IFRS Group reporting. This includes updating annual guidance for local UK pack preparers and preparation of all UK prior year adjustments and true-ups
  • Support with monthly CT and WHT provisions for UK reporting units
  • Support the Tax Reporting Director with any other Year End UK tax workings e.g., WHT accruals, CIR estimates, UK Pension calculations, and overall assessment of the UK Group position
  • Support with UK tax forecasting and budgeting as required, including keeping the Group ETR model up to date, to enable broader management and monitoring of our Group ETR

Manage UK VAT Compliance

  • Ensure timely and accurate preparation, review, and filing of quarterly UK VAT returns, in an MTD compliant manner, to enable us to meet our UK compliance obligations
  • Ensure timely and accurate VAT payments and refunds, to enable management of the broader operating cash position. This includes payment of UK quarterly VAT payments, and monitoring any VAT payments or refunds arising from ECNs and audits
  • Support review and identification of UK VAT errors and manage engagement with HMRC in relation to amended disclosures, e.g. Error Correction Notices
  • Support preparation of other relevant UK VAT filings e.g. Option to Tax
  • Support the business with general UK VAT queries, including managing liaison with any third-party advisers as required, to enable decision-making that incorporates tax considerations

Manage UK Tax Risk Identification and Mitigation

  • Ensure complete and proper retention of documents that support the UK tax positions taken, to enable appropriate tax risk management and dispute resolution
  • Ensure maintenance of effective control procedures and ongoing improvements for all aspects of the UK tax compliance processes
  • Ensure timely and accurate resolution of any UK tax audits, enabling optimisation of dispute resolution. This includes the preparation of documents for audits, preparing and/or reviewing correspondence responding to HMRC queries, and liaising with tax advisers where relevant
  • Support with UK tax risk identification, mitigation, and reporting, including supporting compliance with SAO regulations and filings, and updating the Group Tax Risk Register
  • Support the wider Tax Leadership Team with continuing tax process improvements and efficiencies, including review and management of any tax software implementation and integration that impacts UK compliance or reporting

Other Compliance and Advisory

  • Pillar II: Ensure timely and accurate ongoing Pillar II compliance requirements including data collection and assessment for Global Minimum Tax filing obligations and payments. This includes supporting with initial Pillar II compliance implementation. Initial Pillar II training will be provided in partnership with advisory firms.
  • Employment Taxes: Support Group HR with the PAYE Settlement Agreement and other adhoc employment tax queries and audits
  • Advisory: Support with provision of tax advice on UK transactions, tax optimisation projects and restructurings (e.g. liquidations and capital reductions) as they arise.
  • Other Taxes: Supporting business teams in relation to any HMRC queries around UK operational tax (e.g. customs duties)

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Minimum Education: degree + ACCA/CA or equivalent tax qualification
  • 5 to 8 years of experience in a UK tax role
  • VAT experience
  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong communication and people skills, including face-to-face, over the telephone, and in writing; confident in dealing with individuals at all levels of an organisation
  • Ability to handle tight deadlines and work on multiple issues at the same time.
  • Familiar with standard business application tools such as Excel, Word,and PowerPoint
  • Inquisitive, with the ability to support an evolving team and find solutions to drive quality deliverables
  • Experience with UK outbound multinationals
