Job description

Job Description:

The main role of a PCA is to assist other health care professionals so as to provide the best personal care to patients. Patient care assistants will perform basic medical tasks to primarily to elderly patients; specifically, those with dementia.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Clinical and Personal Care

  • Assist residents to carry out their activities of daily living e.g. washing, dressing, eating and bathing.
  • Address residents respectfully and give care ensuring dignity and privacy are maintained.
  • Perform a range of clinical skills in accordance with the individual resident’s needs. These could include blood pressure, temperature, weighing and measuring as identified in the care plan, ensuring that these are accurately documented, reported and acted upon as necessary.
  • Take care of resident clothing, ensuring the correct collection, distribution and return of all laundered items.
  • Keep the residents’ room tidy, carry out bed making and changing of linen, disposing of soiled linen in accordance with the company procedure.
  • Participate in the programme of activities for residents both inside and outside of the home.
  • Build and maintain good relationships with residents, providing care in such a way to help maintain and improve, where possible, independence and individuality.

Quality of care

  • Understand the importance of privacy, dignity, choice and consent and always uphold these basic rights.
  • Contribute to the individualised person-centred care planning process of each resident and recording appropriate interactions and observations.
  • Compliance with the operational policies and procedures of the Home.
  • Report all comments, compliments and complaints in the appropriate manner.

Key Relationships

  • Work collaboratively with the clinical team to promote a healthy, professional and friendly atmosphere for all residents and their families and friends.
  • Support new residents, their families and friends with familiarisation of the home.
  • Maintain communication and working relationships with healthcare professionals both in the home and externally.

Working Conditions

  • Rotational shift working including days, nights, weekends and bank holidays.
  • This is a physically demanding role; you will be required to stand for extended periods of time and do repetitive tasks.

Qualifications:

You must possess at least one of the following certifications:

  • Practical Nursing Diploma
  • Community Health Aide Certificate
  • Geriatric Nursing level 3
  • NCTVET/NVQJ Allied Health - PCA level 2 or 3
Work experience requirement:
  • A minimum of two years' current experience working in a care home/hospital.
