Job summary

National Grid, a leading UK energy company, seeks a UK Group Safety Specialist to shape safety governance and drive improvements across more than 30,000 employees. You will support the UK Safety Manager, ensure compliance with UK and US regulations, and provide technical safety guidance to diverse business units.

You will develop resources, lead audits, monitor indicators, and engage with industry groups to raise safety standards. A Nebosh General certificate and UK travel are essential.

Qualifications

  • Nebosh General certificate (or equivalent).
  • Health and Safety expertise in high-risk sectors, with in-depth knowledge of construction and/or electrical operations.
  • Desirable: Technical experience in Electrical Operations.
  • Strong stakeholder management and communication skills; analytical abilities; proficiency with Microsoft PowerPoint.

Responsibilities

  • Provide guidance to business unit safety teams on operational safety practices and Group standards.
  • Advise business units on operational safety and promote best practices within group networks.
  • Build relationships with stakeholders at all levels and communicate effectively.
  • Create user-friendly safety guidance materials, toolkits and documents.
  • Conduct safety audits and inspections, identify risks and recommend improvements for non-compliance.
  • Track safety performance indicators and analyze trends to flag issues early.
  • Assist with safety investigations and implement lessons learned.
  • Support development and delivery of safety training programs.

Join our Group Safety, Health and Wellbeing (SHW) team at National Grid, where you will play a critical role in shaping the safety strategy for over 30,000 employees. As the UK Group Safety Specialist, you will be instrumental in contributing to the implementation and development of operational Group-wide safety governance standards, policies, and assurance frameworks.

In this role, you will support the UK Safety Manager and collaborate with Safety counterparts ensuring compliance with both UK and US regulations and industry best practices. This role will assist with providing operational guidance and technical support to safety teams across diverse business units, fostering a robust safety culture.

Key responsibilities
  • Support the UK Safety Manager: To provide guidance to business unit safety teams on effective operational safety practices and Group wide standards and frameworks.
  • Trusted Advisor: Advising business units on operational safety and facilitating collaboration through group-wide networks to promote best practices.
  • Stakeholder Management: Building strong relationships and communicating effectively with stakeholders at all levels of the organisation.
  • Develop Resources: Create user-friendly guidance materials, toolkits and documents to enhance the Group Safety Frameworks.
  • Conduct Operational Audits and Inspections: Conduct safety audits and inspections to identify risks proactively and provide recommendations for non-compliance.
  • Monitor Safety Indicators: Track and analyse safety performance indicators to detect trends and potential problem areas, enabling proactive recommendations before issues arise.
  • Participate in Incident Investigations: Conduct investigations as required to ensure investigations are conducted at a sufficient level, gathering information and implementing lessons learned to prevent recurrence.
  • Assist with Training: Support the development and delivery of safety training programs.
  • Engage in Industry Discussions: Represent National Grid in industry groups to enhance safety standards.
About you

You are dedicated to fostering a safe working environment across a broad and varied operational landscape. With practical experience in high-risk industries and a solid understanding of construction and/or electrical safety, you will work collaboratively across teams to strengthen safety culture and ensure compliance.
Your expertise includes a deep understanding of UK Health and Safety legislation, particularly the Construction Design and Management (CDM) Regulations 2015, as well as hands‑on experience with safety management systems. You actively contribute to safety training, audits, and compliance monitoring, and engage with Business Unit safety leads to ensure alignment with governance standards.
Your resilience, confidence, and willingness to challenge unsafe behaviours make you a strong advocate for continuous improvement.

Qualifications
Education: A Nebosh General certificate (and or equivalent)
Experience: Health and Safety expertise in high‑risk sectors, with in‑depth knowledge of construction and/or electrical operations.
Desirable: Technical experience in Electrical Operations
Skills: Strong Stakeholder management and communication skills, analytical skills, and proficiency with Microsoft programs including MS PowerPoint.
Travel: Willingness to travel in the UK as required, with full driving license.
