It is one of the largest Schools of Architecture in the country, with over 1200 students from approximately 85 countries and more than 150 staff from diverse backgrounds. The School maintains high standards of quality and a strong sense of community despite its size.
The School is characterized by excellence, ambition, boldness, inquisitiveness, innovation, and social justice. Our MA in Architecture and Urbanism offers a platform for exploring how global forces influence cities. It promotes an inclusive, multidisciplinary approach that links architecture to urban transformation, encouraging critical engagement with real-world challenges through design and research.
Upon appointment, the successful candidate will supervise and assess postgraduate dissertations on topics related to architecture and urbanism, particularly those extending across theories and practices. They will also support students in engaging with a seminar series on architecture and urban design theories, providing feedback on reflective writing and visual analysis. The role involves working independently within a team of Theory Tutors from practice and academia, collaborating to enhance students' critical understanding of contemporary theories and practices relevant to urban creation and critique.
The role requires an understanding of qualitative research design and implementation in architecture, urbanism, or related disciplines, gained through postgraduate research training or practice-based research experience. The candidate should have broad knowledge of research and practice literature in architecture and urbanism, with the ability to guide literature reviews and support student learning. Prior experience supervising postgraduate dissertations or guiding practice-based research that leads to research outputs is desirable. The candidate should be able to communicate complex concepts clearly and inspire students, ensuring an excellent learning environment through strong organizational skills.
