Job description

Turnaround Manager – Neurological Rehabilitation

Location: York | 12-Month Fixed-Term Contract

Salary: £48,000 to £52,800 DOE + Excellent Benefits

Lead Change. Strengthen Quality. Shape the Future of Care.

Lead One of the UK's Most Important Service Improvement Programmes

Are you an experienced healthcare leader with a proven track record of transforming underperforming services and achieving outstanding regulatory outcomes?

Brainkind the UK's leading neurological care and rehabilitation charity, is seeking an exceptional clinically qualified Turnaround Manager to lead the transformation programme of service redesign in our specialist neurological rehabilitation services in York.

About the service:

York is transitioning to a new model of care. The service is currently rated Good and is undergoing a CQC inspection, making strong clinical leadership, robust governance and the maintenance of high-quality care essential.

This is a dedicated, fixed-term role rather than a conventional Registered Manager vacancy. Working alongside the Transformation Manager, you will lead the practical implementation of the new model at service level, partnering with the Registered Manager, Regional Manager and Operational Director to ensure changes are safe, effective and sustainable.

About Brainkind

Brainkind is the UK's leading charity supporting people with acquired brain injuries, traumatic brain injuries, strokes and a range of complex neurological conditions.

Across our nationwide network of specialist hospitals, residential rehabilitation services and supported living environments, we deliver expert, person-centred care that enables individuals to maximise their independence, rebuild their confidence and achieve the very best quality of life.

Our multidisciplinary teams combine specialist nursing, therapy, psychology and rehabilitation expertise to deliver outstanding neurological care that truly changes lives.

What You'll Be Responsible For: Key Responsibilities
Quality, Governance and CQC
  • Support the Registered Manager through the current CQC inspection and address any resulting actions.
  • Strengthen clinical governance, quality assurance, safeguarding and risk management.
  • Review audits, incidents, complaints and quality data, ensuring findings translate into measurable action.
  • Maintain regulatory compliance and ensure care quality and safety remain central to all decisions.
  • Promote accountability, openness and a culture of learning.
Service Redesign and Clinical Leadership
  • Work with the Transformation Manager to deliver an agreed implementation plan with clear milestones and outcomes.
  • Coordinate the introduction of the new model of care across clinical and operational teams.
  • Assess clinical risks and ensure changes are supported by appropriate care planning, consultation and oversight.
  • Maintain continuity of care and ensure the service remains responsive to individual needs.
  • Monitor progress, address barriers and elevate risks or decisions where necessary.
Workforce and Operational Performances
  • Engage staff throughout the transition, promoting clear communication and accountability.
  • Work with the Registered Manager and HR to align staffing structures, skill mix and competencies with future service requirements.
  • Review operational performance, resource utilisation and budgets, identifying opportunities to improve efficiency without compromising quality.
  • Establish sustainable processes and complete a structured handover at the end of the contract.
Partnership Working
  • Build effective relationships with the Transformation Manager, Registered Manager, Regional Manager, Operational Director and clinical teams.
  • Engage with the people we support, families, commissioners and other stakeholders as required.
  • Provide clear updates on progress, quality, risks and outcomes.
What We're Looking For
Essential Criteria
  • A relevant clinical qualification and current registration with either the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) or Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
  • Significant experience in a senior clinical, operational or healthcare management role.
  • Demonstrable experience of clinical governance, quality assurance and service redesign.
  • Strong knowledge of CQC requirements, safeguarding, risk management and regulatory compliance.
  • Experience of leading multidisciplinary teams and delivering measurable outcomes.
  • Ability to analyse quality data, manage competing priorities and lead teams through change.
  • Strong communication, decision-making and stakeholder management skills.
  • A commitment to person-centred care, professional accountability and continuous improvement.
Desirable Criteria
  • Experience in neurological rehabilitation, acquired brain injury, stroke services or complex care.
  • Previous experience in a turnaround, interim management or transformation role.
  • Experience of implementing a new model of care or supporting CQC inspections.
  • Experience of financial management and workforce planning.
  • A relevant leadership or management qualification.
What Success Looks Like

By the end of the 12-month contract, you will have:

  • Delivered the agreed service redesign plan and implemented the new model of care.
  • Maintained high standards of care and regulatory compliance throughout the transition.
  • Supported the CQC inspection process and completed any agreed follow‑up actions.
  • Strengthened governance, audit effectiveness, risk management and organisational learning.
  • Aligned workforce capability and operational processes with future service requirements.
  • Embedded sustainable arrangements and completed a clear handover to the substantive leadership team.
  • Success will be measured against agreed milestones and quality, governance and operational outcomes.
Ready to Make a Difference?

This is more than a management role.

It's an opportunity to transform a specialist neurological rehabilitation service, inspire a team, improve lives and leave a legacy of sustainable excellence.

If you have the resilience, experience and leadership to drive meaningful change, we'd love to hear from you. If you have the clinical expertise, governance experience and leadership skills to guide a service through significant change while maintaining high standards of care, we would welcome your application.
