Job description

If you are a senior NHS clinical leader who has driven improvement in quality, safety and outcomes at the highest level, we invite you to take your impact to a national platform.

The Healthcare Quality Improvement Partnership (HQIP) is seeking a new Trustee to join our Board, someone with recent or current experience as a Medical Director or Deputy Medical Director, who can bring the voice of clinical leadership into the heart of our national work.

This is more than a governance role. It is an opportunity to influence the future of healthcare quality improvement in England and Wales, ensuring that measurement translates into meaningful change and better outcomes for patients.

About HQIP

HQIP exists to drive improvement in the quality of care for patients. We do this by commissioning and managing the National Clinical Audit and Patient Outcomes Programme (NCAPOP) on behalf of NHS England and other key stakeholders. Through national audits, outcome review programmes and real-world data, we shine a light on where care is succeeding and where it must improve.

We work to ensure that the insights generated through measurement lead to action, closing the loop between data and improvement. Our goal is simple: to help every provider deliver care that is safer, more effective and more equitable for every patient.

The Role

Trustee – Senior Clinical Leader As a Trustee, you will contribute to HQIP’s strategic direction, oversight and governance. More specifically, we are seeking a senior clinical leader to bring deep insight into how NHS organisations lead quality and safety at board level, and how clinical audit can be a lever for transformation.

You will help shape how HQIP responds to the realities of frontline care, advising on how national programmes can remain relevant, practical and impactful for NHS organisations. You will act as a bridge between clinical services and national policy, helping HQIP maintain its influence and integrity within the system.

This is a voluntary, non-executive governance role with expenses reimbursed. Board meetings take place quarterly, with occasional sub-committee work. Meetings are typically virtual, with some held in London. The standard term of office is three years, renewable by agreement.

What You Will Bring

We are seeking a trustee with significant experience of clinical leadership and quality improvement, typically at the level of Medical Director or Deputy Medical Director within the NHS.

You will bring:

Quality Improvement Insight
You have led initiatives to raise care standards, using evidence and data to drive change at scale. You understand how to embed continuous improvement into clinical practice.

Patient Safety Leadership
You have overseen patient safety and clinical risk at board level, responding to incidents, shaping learning systems and promoting a culture of openness and safety.

Expertise in Clinical Governance
You are fluent in the language of assurance, standards and compliance. You know what governance looks like when it is done well, and you will apply that insight to HQIP’s own oversight.

urning Insight into Action
You have translated audit findings and clinical evidence into service redesigns, pathway changes or targeted improvement projects. You have made national data work for your organisation, and you will help HQIP support others to do the same.

A Commitment to Audit
You value clinical audit not just as a tool for scrutiny, but as a catalyst for learning. You understand the challenges of embedding audit into clinical teams, and you know how to create buy-in. As a trustee, you will bring authenticity and credibility to HQIP’s mission.

Your Strategic Impact Your presence on our Board will bring real influence.

You will help shape how national audit contributes to NHS policy and quality strategies. You will strengthen HQIP’s ability to connect with frontline clinicians, ensuring our programmes are relevant, accessible and effective. You will support our mission to improve healthcare by ensuring our work remains clinically meaningful, evidence-based and patient-centred. You will help enhance governance, assurance and accountability across our portfolio. And most importantly, you will help make the NHS a better, safer place for patients.

Who Should Apply

This role is ideally suited to senior clinicians who are committed to improvement and who wish to shape the future of care beyond their own organisation.

Whether you are a current Medical Director or Deputy, or recently retired from a senior leadership post and seeking to contribute nationally, your experience and insights will be welcomed.

What matters most is your alignment with our mission, your deep understanding of quality and safety in healthcare, and your commitment to helping the system learn and improve.

How to Apply

If you are passionate about quality improvement and keen to shape healthcare at a system level, we want to hear from you. To express interest in this trustee role, please send a brief cover letter and CV to hqip.hr@hqip.org.uk by 30 May 2025. In your application, please highlight your relevant senior clinical leadership experience and what you believe you can contribute to HQIP’s mission.

For an informal discussion about the role, you may contact our Chief Executive or current Chair via the same email address. Further information about HQIP and our programmes can be found on our website www.hqip.org.uk.

Join us in ensuring that measuring quality of care leads to improving quality of care. Together, we can strengthen the impact of clinical audit and help deliver better outcomes for patients across the NHS.

HQIP is committed to inclusivity and welcomes applications from all sections of the community. We particularly encourage senior clinicians from diverse backgrounds to apply.

(Note: This is a voluntary non-executive trustee position. Reasonable travel and subsistence expenses will be reimbursed. Board meetings are held three times a year, two virtual Board meetings and one in-person Board meeting, which will also include the AGM, held in central London, with sub-committee meetings as needed.)

A Final Word

The NHS needs leaders who can connect strategy with reality, who can champion the value of data and audit not just as a measure of performance, but as a driver of better care.

If you believe in that mission and want to shape healthcare at a national level, then this trustee opportunity is for you.

Join us. Together, we can ensure that measuring quality leads to improving quality for every patient, in every part of the system.

HQIP is committed to diversity and inclusion. We particularly welcome applications from senior clinicians from underrepresented backgrounds, and we are open to flexible models of engagement.
