Job description

We are looking to appoint a Trust Senior Clinical Fellow within HPB (Hepato-Pancreatico-Biliary) surgery service at University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Derriford Hospital, Devon. This post is a role intended for surgeons who are towards the end of their specialist training (ST6 or above), either seeking employment as a consultant or who wish to further their clinical experience before taking up appointment to a consultant position.

Previous experience in General Surgery and Hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) is essential.

Main duties of the job

Some of the duties of the StR Higher are as follows:

  • Participate in the Theatre and ward care of Hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) and emergency surgery patients.
  • Participate in the Middle grade on-call rota.
  • Liaise with junior trainees to ensure appropriate pre-operative work-up including imaging.
  • Attend regular operating sessions of the clinical team to assist with major surgery and develop skills of increasing complexity under the close supervision of the Consultant.
  • Assist with regular outpatient clinics under the Consultant's guidance.
  • Undertake administrative duties including the dictation of discharge summaries, operating notes, outpatient clinic letters and other relevant clinical correspondence.
  • Perform duties in emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the Consultants.
  • Contribute to the teaching of medical students, and junior trainees.
  • Contribute to rota management of the junior doctors.

The unit is organisationally part of the Surgery Care Group. The HPB unit has 6 consultants, and the unit undertakes both open and laparoscopic surgery for complex benign and malignant conditions of liver, pancreas, and biliary system.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

We are looking to appoint a StR Higher 6+ in HPB surgery. The post is intended for surgeons who are toward the end of their specialist training, either seeking employment as a consultant or who wish to further their clinical experience before taking up appointment to a consultant position.

This is a Trust appointment, not a formal training post, so does not have Deanery or Royal College approval for training purposes. This is a fixed term post with terms and conditions that follow the specialist registrar grade, except for study leave as outlined in section 3.5. The salary scale is within the Specialist Registrar salary scale.

The post-holder will be supervised in their work by a designated consultant. They will be expected to be able to perform routine, uncomplicated procedures (such as cholecystectomy and hernia repair) with minimal supervision. The focus of training will be all Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary procedures.
