The post will offer candidates a unique opportunity to train in a busy and supportive environment. The ED has an enthusiastic and dedicated consultant team with a wide range of backgrounds and specialist interests. The department has a good track record for non-career middle grades moving on into training posts. The posts are supported by educational teaching, learning and assessment opportunities equivalent to those on national programmes. The successful applicant will be assigned a consultant mentor.

The Trust runs ALS, ATLS, and APLS courses on a regular basis.

These middle grade posts will join a dedicated team with an established track record for implementing change to improve patient care.

The Emergency Department at COCH is one of the major accident units for Cheshire, Merseyside and Flintshire. The Department deals with the full range of surgical, medical and paediatric emergencies and has full back-up (Radiology, Pathology and Anaesthetics), together with the normal range of in-patient specialties found within an acute hospital. There is excellent and timely access to CT and interventional radiology on a 24 hour basis, with PACS links to regional centres to facilitate image transfer and prompt onward referral, as needed. There is access to Consultant advice 24/7, with Consultant presence in the Department until midnight, and a guaranteed 30 minute response time for on-call emergency attendance.

Main duties of the job

The duties will cover the whole range of clinical responsibilities, working equally in both Minors and Majors, working closely with the ANP and ENP teams and providing them with senior support.

You will be expected to provide a significant personal commitment to the assessment, treatment and disposal of patients attending the Emergency Department.

You will be supporting 24/7 middle grade cover for the department. There is consultant presence from 0900hrs until midnight 7 days per week. Between the hours of midnight and 0800hrs the evening consultant provides ongoing support on an 'on-call' basis.

You will be accountable to the consultants in Emergency Medicine. You will be responsible for carrying outward rounds on the Emergency Assessment Unit from time to time on a shared basis with the other middle grade and senior doctors. You will be expected to take a lead role in the management of acutely ill and trauma patients.

The post holder will be expected to prioritise and time-manage effectively in relation to the needs and activity of the department utilising the staffing of the department and seeking senior advice where necessary.You will supervise more junior doctors, and also medical students will and take an active role in their education, both formal and informal. This will enable the post holder to actively develop their leadership skills.

Person Specification

Qualifications

• A Medical degree or Diploma, acceptable by the General Medical Council i.e. MBBS or equivalent
• MRCEM or FRCEM Intermediate
• Shall have full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practice
• Evidence of achievement of Foundation competences as per UKFPO affiliated Foundation Programme or equivalent by time of appointment in line with GMC standards/ Good Medical Practice
• At least one of ATLS, ALS or APLS
• Further ATLS/ALS, APLS or PALS provider
• GIC/Instructor status in one of the above

Experience

• Experience of working within an NHS Emergency Department
• Completed at least 3 years post Foundation / Internship training (or equivalent gained on a part time or flexible basis), or shall have equivalent experience and competencies
• 12 months experience in Emergency Medicine
• Evidence that career progression is consistent with personal circumstances
• Evidence that present achievement and performance is commensurate with totality of period of training
• Experience of audit or research
• Experience in acute medicine, critical care, Anaesthesia, ICM
• Experience in Paediatric EM
