Job description
Overview

This 12-month fellowship would be suitable for trainees who have completed, or who are near to completing, their higher surgical training and would like specialised clinical experience in all aspects of colorectal surgery before attaining a Consultant position. Opportunities to gain experience in advanced laparoscopic colorectal surgery, proctology including (TAMIS & Fistura), pelvic floor surgery, IBD surgery and tibial nerve stimulation. There are opportunities to shadow the hospital executive team for those seeking managerial experience. This post has been approved by the Royal College of Surgeons and the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain & Ireland as part of the RCS Senior Clinical Fellowship Scheme.

Intending applicants are welcome to visit the hospitals at their own expense. Short listed candidates are encouraged to visit the hospital before being interviewed.

Responsibilities
  • Perform daily ward rounds and facilitate the delivery of patient care within an enhanced recovery programme.
  • Provide colorectal opinions on referrals from across the organisation.
  • Engage in apprenticeship-style training across various aspects of coloproctology.
  • Undertake outpatient clinics, endoscopy lists and operating theatre lists as directed by the consultants.
  • Contribute to postgraduate and undergraduate General Surgery training within the hospital.
  • Participate in the middle grade on-call rota during on-call shifts available for emergency duties.
  • Work with the multidisciplinary team.
  • Participate in the care of patients attending the department, including examination, investigation, diagnosis and treatment.
  • Recognise personal limitations and seek advice from Consultants in patient management.
  • Perform related duties as required, including exceptional emergencies and duties essential for continuity of patient care.
  • Supervise Core Trainees and FY1s in service delivery in outpatients, inpatients and day services.
  • Participate in Clinical Governance and Risk Assessment processes.
  • Assist or lead in audits under the Audit lead; comply with Data Protection Act and General Data Protection Regulation 2018, maintaining confidentiality of staff, patients and Trust information.
  • Disclose information only to authorised persons or organisations as instructed; breaches may result in disciplinary action.
  • Comply with all Trust policies and work in accordance with Data Protection Act and GDPR 2018. For roles involving management or supervision of staff, ensure staff receive appropriate training (e.g., HISS induction, refresher sessions).
  • Adhere to conflict of interest policies; the Trust is responsible for ensuring high standards of patient care and ethical conduct concerning staff conduct.

The North Middlesex University Hospital and Royal Free NHS Foundation Trust is a medium-sized acute and community trust with more than 525 beds and over 600 community staff, serving a population across Enfield, Haringey, Barnet and surrounding areas.
