Overview

University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust (UHPNT) wishes to appoint a Trust grade Doctor to support our Neurophysiology scientists and help meet the increasing in- and out-patient workload, contributing to the development of a forward-thinking and ambitious department. These are replacement substantive posts to support the current establishment.

Job details

The post is based on a whole-time appointment of 10 PAs. Trust policy bases job plans on 8.5 DCC and 1.5 SPA, with up to one further SPA possible during the job plan review process, depending on departmental and/or care group needs. The average maximum weekly programmed activities for direct clinical care will not exceed 8.5 PA unless by prior mutual agreement.

Job responsibilities

The Neurophysiology department is part of the wider Medicine Care Group, within the Cluster of Neurology & Stroke, Neurophysiology and Neuropsychology. Services provided include diagnostic testing for adults and children in the following conditions:

• EEG: epilepsy, genetic disorders, memory disorders, acute meningitis, encephalitis, status epilepticus, post-neurosurgical procedures and in critical care.
• Prolonged EEG/video telemetry & Ambulatory EEG studies: disorders of consciousness including epilepsy and complex epilepsy syndromes.
• EMG/NCS: neurological, neuromuscular, rheumatological disease and trauma.
• Evoked Potentials: optic nerve disorders, spinal cord compression, congenital disorders, multiple sclerosis and other inflammatory conditions.
• Visual electrodiagnostics: genetic and acquired retinal disorders.
• Daytime and nocturnal sleep studies: narcolepsy, insomnia, hypersomnolence and parasomnias.

Person Specification

Education / qualifications

• Essential: To be registered with the General Medical Council and hold a current Licence to Practice.
• Essential: Training relevant for working as a clinical neurophysiologist.

Desirable

• ALS and APLS training. Level 3 child protection training. Higher degree. Postgraduate prizes and awards. Other medical qualifications. Experience outside specialty.

Skills

• Essential: Demonstrate evidence of good general training and appropriate basic specialty courses. Demonstrable evidence of good specialty training in neurophysiology. Ability to perform advanced neurophysiological procedures relevant to the post and to lead a team.

Desirable

• Understanding of NHS; good time management; wide knowledge of the specialty; participation in relevant courses/meetings; comprehensive knowledge of neurophysiology; advanced courses; previous experience as a neurophysiology consultant.

Research & clinical audit

• Essential: Presentations at local/regional/national/international meetings; publications and presentations in the area of neurophysiology.

Desirable

• Presentations or publications in peer-reviewed journals; ability to conduct clinical audit; evidence of research interest and ongoing research; statistical knowledge.
