Applicationsare invited for the post of Trust Doctor in Vascular Surgery (SPR-level). The successful applicant will work a 1 in6 vascular on-call with no commitment to General Surgery. The post would suitexperienced trainees (senior SHO/core trainees) who wish to obtain furthergrounding/experience in open and endovascular surgery, prior to appointment ona higher surgical training programme. This post represents an opportunity for aSPR equivalent surgical trainee to gain experience in a large acute hospitalgaining wide experience in emergency and elective practice. The post holder will also have theopportunity to attend departmental surgery teaching sessions, in addition toparticipation at Morbidity and Mortality meetings and presentation of audit topeers. We are one of three tertiarycentres for vascular services in the North East, providing services to apopulation of approximately 900,000. The service consists of 8 ConsultantSurgeons and 5 Specialist Vascular Nurses supported by a wide team of juniordoctors (4xF1, 2xSHO, 6xSpR), nursing and administrative staff, with input frommany other services such as Occupational Therapy, Podiatry andPhysiotherapy. The team also worksclosely with the Radiology Department to offer non-invasive treatments forVascular patients, working with specialist interventional Radiologists.
Theservice provides a comprehensive Endovascular Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Repair(EVAR) programme. All major operationstake place at Sunderland as the arterial hub site, with outpatient clinics atSunderland, South Tyneside, Bishop Auckland and North Durham Hospitals. A dedicated vascular ward runs out ofSunderland Royal Hospital which has capacity for 24 patients (C36). The ward has a Ward Manager and 2 JuniorSisters responsible to increase leadership on the ward. Day-case procedures arealso undertaken from Durham Treatment Centre to provide services close to homefor patients in the Durham locality. The Directorate is dynamic and forward thinking. STSFT is seeking a motivated individual tojoin the team from as a Trust Doctor working at Registrar level at this major arterialCentre. The post holder will have experience equivalent to that of ST3-6trainee who wishes to train further in a broad range of vascular andendovascular surgery.
The Unit specialises insurgeon-led/delivered endovascular (percutaneous & hybrid) care, aorticsurgery, carotid endarterectomy, lower limb reconstruction and complex venouswork. Active participation is expected in the departmental meetings,rota management and departmental junior doctor teaching programmes.Clinical audit projects are actively encouraged in the department, whilstparticipation in clinical governance and morbidity & mortality meetings ismandatory.
The successful applicant will participatein an on-call rota (1:6) which supports the vascular service exclusively. Therewill be no on-call commitment to General Surgery. This post represents anexcellent opportunity for a junior surgical trainee to gain experience in alarge acute hospital with contemporary tertiary vascular emergency and electivepractice. This post will be based predominantly at Sunderland RoyalHospital vascular hub, although provision of some clinic and day-case activitymay be required at South Tyneside Hospital, Bishop Auckland Hospital,University Hospital of North Durham and Durham Treatment Centre.

This is initially a fixed term appointment for 12 months. The successful applicantwill work a 1 in 6 vascular on-call with no commitment to General Surgery. Thepost may suit experienced junior trainees (senior SHO/core trainees) who wishto obtain further grounding/experience in open and endovascular surgery, priorto appointment on a higher surgical training programme.
There will be opportunities to perform research and tolearn endovascular techniques as well as routine open vascular surgery. TheUnit specialises in surgeon-led/delivered endovascular (percutaneous &hybrid) care, aortic surgery, carotid endarterectomy, lower limb reconstruction,renal access surgery and complex venous work.
Active participation is expected in the departmentalmeetings, rota management and departmental junior doctor teachingprogrammes. Clinical audit projects areactively encouraged in the department, whilst participation in clinicalgovernance and morbidity & mortality meetings is mandatory.
Applicants should have full GMC registration andpossession of the MRCS is essential.
