University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust is offering a full-time trainee position focusing on orthopaedics at St Richards Hospital. The successful candidate will provide essential patient care and be involved in surgical teams while participating in a structured shift rota. This role promises professional growth and the opportunity to work alongside experienced consultants, all within a supportive and inclusive environment.
The successful trainee is expected to provide day-to-day care for in-patients on the wards, HDU, and ITU. They should see all their patients prior to surgery and, whenever possible, assist and be taught in theatre. In out-patients, they will see new patients under the supervision of a consultant and present cases for discussion and future management.
Currently, a full shift system is in operation, including daily, post-take, consultant-led ward rounds, with outgoing night and incoming day trainees present for handovers and case presentations. Trainees will undertake Friday/Saturday/Sunday night shifts or weekday night shifts within a rota. Daytime long days are on a rolling rota. During on-call periods, the primary responsibility is emergency admissions.
This is a full-time position involving participation in a shift rota system working 1 in 8. Duties include patient care on the Surgical/Orthopaedics Wards, attending ward rounds, and, when possible, attending Trauma/Elective Theatre and clinics. The post involves reviewing patients on the trauma orthopaedic ward, the children's ward, and other orthopaedic beds, as well as arranging admissions and initial trauma management.
The department at St Richards Hospital includes twelve Orthopaedic Consultants who hold outpatient and fracture clinics, admit trauma, elective, and rehabilitation patients, and operate full facilities including plaster room, x-ray, CT, MRI, and PACS radiology. The job involves an on-call commitment for reviewing and admitting orthopaedic and urology patients via A&E and direct GP referrals, supported by on-site and off-site Urology Registrars.
