Job description

Purpose of the Treasurer Role: As a trustee you will share responsibility with the board of trustees for making sure that the charity’s money is safe, used properly and accounted for. In addition, as Treasurer, your role will include: maintaining an overview of the organisation’s finances; ensuring the organisation’s financial viability and ensuring that proper financial records and procedures are maintained.

Role Responsibilities:

The trustees are jointly responsible for the overall governance and strategic direction of the charity, its financial health, the probity of its activities and developing the organisation’s aims, objectives and goals in accordance with the governing document, legal and regulatory guidelines.

The Treasurer has an important role in contributing to/guiding/informing the Board’s collective responsibility:

  1. Overseeing, approving and presenting budgets, accounts and financial statements.
  2. Ensuring the financial resources of the organisation meet its present and future needs.
  3. Ensuring that the charity has an appropriate reserves policy.
  4. Preparing and presenting financial reports to the board.
  5. Ensuring that appropriate accounting procedures and controls are in place.
  6. Liaising with any paid staff and volunteers about financial matters.
  7. Advising on the financial implications of the organisation’s strategic plans.
  8. Ensuring that there is no conflict between investments and the aims and objects of the charity.
  9. Ensuring that the accounts are prepared and disclosed in the form required by funders and the relevant statutory bodies.
  10. Ensuring that the accounts are scrutinised in the manner required and any recommendations are implemented.
  11. Keeping the board informed about its financial duties and responsibilities.
  12. Contributing to the fundraising strategy of the organisation.
  13. Making a formal presentation of the accounts at the annual general meeting.
  14. Drawing attention to important points in a way that’s coherent and easy to understand.
  15. Sitting on appraisal, recruitment and disciplinary panels as required.
  16. Being a bank signatory and approving documentation as required.

Person Specification

We are seeking individuals with:

  1. A commitment to the organisation and its vision for a non-violent society.
  2. A willingness to devote the necessary time and effort.
  3. Strategic vision.
  4. Good, independent judgement.
  5. An ability to think creatively.
  6. A willingness to speak their mind.
  7. An understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship.
  8. An ability to work effectively as a member of a team.

As Treasurer you will also have the following qualities:

  1. Financial qualifications and experience.
  2. Some experience of charity finance, fundraising and pension schemes.
  3. Ability to analyse proposals and examine their financial consequences.
  4. Be prepared to make unpopular recommendations to the board.
  5. A willingness to be available to staff for advice and enquiries on an ad hoc basis.
