Transport Planner

Responsibilities

  • Plan and schedule deliveries and collections across the UK to ensure optimal use of fleet and resources.
  • Coordinate with warehouse, drivers, customer service, and third-party carriers to meet delivery deadlines.
  • Monitor vehicle movements using tracking systems, ensuring efficiency and adherence to time windows.
  • Allocate loads to in-house and subcontracted drivers, ensuring compliance with fragile goods handling procedures.
  • Prepare and issue driver manifests and route plans.
  • Liaise with customers for booking slots, delivery queries, and service updates.
  • Ensure legal compliance with transport regulations including driver hours, vehicle maintenance schedules, and health and safety.
  • Support the administration and upkeep of rate cards and pricing for transport services.
  • Respond to live issues including delays, route changes, or vehicle breakdowns.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives for delivery performance, cost reduction, and customer satisfaction.


Objectives

  • Deliver on-time performance targets of >99% for B2B and B2C deliveries.
  • Maximise fleet utilisation and minimise empty running.
  • Reduce planning errors and rework to <1% of daily manifests.
  • Maintain high levels of customer service through accurate planning and communication.
  • Ensure full compliance with transport legislation and internal operating procedures.



Lines of Reporting

  • Reports directly to: Senior Operations Manager.
  • Works closely with: Warehouse Team, Customer Service, Drivers, Admin Team, Subcontractors, and the Senior Management Team.


Expectations

  • Maintain a proactive and flexible approach to planning changes and service issues.
  • Demonstrate strong problem-solving and decision-making skills under pressure.
  • Uphold Stop Start Transport's premium service values in all internal and external interactions.
  • Promote safe, legal, and sustainable transport practices.
  • Contribute to KPI reviews and operational meetings with clear and accurate data.


Skills and Qualifications

  • Proven experience as a Transport Planner or similar role in logistics/transportation (3+ years ).
  • Strong knowledge of UK road networks, routing systems, and vehicle restrictions.
  • Experience using Descartes or similar route planning/optimisation software (knowledge of Descartes is highly beneficial).
  • Competent with Microsoft Excel and vehicle tracking tools.
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of driver hours, WTD, and transport compliance regulations.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.

Salary and Benefits

  • Salary: £34,500 - £37,500 per annum (dependent on experience)
  • Holiday: 33 days annual leave (including bank holidays)
