Job summary

Culina is seeking a Transport Operator to join the Chilled & Fresh division in Charlton on a full-time permanent basis. The role requires effective vehicle utilization, clear driver instructions, and ensuring service levels meet cost and regulatory constraints.

The successful candidate will manage driver hours, coordinate with planning teams to optimise fleet usage, and maintain safe, compliant transport operations. Salary is £30,000 per annum with Wednesday–Saturday night shifts.

Qualifications

• Experience in a distribution/transport environment.
• Ability to manage own workload under pressure.
• Solid knowledge of driver hours regulations and tachograph law.
• Excellent organisational and communication skills.
• Ability to work unsupervised with initiative.

Responsibilities

• Communicate all job instructions to drivers and sub-contractors.
• Plan driver, vehicle, and agency utilisation considering site coverage.
• Ensure drivers work within driver hours regulations and safety standards.
• Collaborate with planning to optimise fleet utilisation and timely deliveries.
• Assist in equipment control and recording customer requirements.
• Coordinate with Compliance to ensure trucks are legal and data is uploaded timely.
• Investigate accidents or driver performance issues and escalate as needed.
• Encourage safe driving and cost management aligned with KPIs.
• Perform additional tasks as required by management.

Life in this role

As part of our Chilled & Fresh division, we have an exciting opportunity to join the team as a Transport Operator on a full time permanent basis.

Salary: £30,000 per annum.

Shift: Wednesday-Saturday, 19:30pm- 7:30am.

As the Transport Operator you will be responsible for effectively managing vehicle utilization and ensuring drivers are given clear and precise instructions. Ensuring that all service levels are met cost effectively and within the constraints of driver’s hours and H&S regulations.

Key Duties of a Transport Operator

• Ensuring that all elements of the job are effectively communicated to drivers and sub-contractors.
• To plan the effective utilisation of drivers, vehicles, sub-contractors and agencies ensuring that all Company sites are fully considered when doing so.
• Ensure that all drivers are working within a safe environment and follow driver hours regulations.
• Liaising with planning team to optimise fleet/driver utilisation, identifying and resolving problems affecting delivery on time.
• To assist in the control of equipment, ensuring that customer requirements are met and recorded.
• Working with Compliance to ensure trucks are legal and information is downloaded in a timely manner.
• Conducting initial investigations into accidents or issues of driver performance and raising with Transport Supervisors and HR to ensure they are dealt with efficiently and consistently.
• Assist Supervisors in speaking to drivers about Virtual Risk Manager and improving driving style to improve FW MPG and overall safety and to ensure that costs are managed in accordance with the KPI’s.
• Undertake additional tasks/duties as may be required by Management from time to time.

Qualifications

• Basic understanding of driver’s hours regulations/Tachograph law.
• Excellent organisational skills.
• Strong communication skills (written and verbal).
• Initiative and the ability to work unsupervised.
