Job summary

Southwark Council is seeking an Engineer - Transport to lead the design and development of highways and transport improvement schemes. You will work from feasibility through to construction, producing high-quality AutoCAD drawings and driving walking, cycling and public realm enhancements.

You will manage budgets up to £1m, coordinate investigations, provide technical advice on design and materials, and engage with residents and stakeholders to ensure timely delivery.

Qualifications

• Degree in Civil Engineering, Highway Engineering or Transportation Engineering.
• Experience delivering highway and transport improvement schemes (junction upgrades, pedestrian crossings, cycle routes, bus priority, road safety).
• Strong understanding of UK highway design standards, regulations and CDM requirements.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD and production of technical drawings.
• Experience preparing cost estimates and Bills of Quantities.
• Knowledge of CDM regulations and design risk management.
• Excellent communication skills to explain complex technical information.

Responsibilities

• Lead design development of major highways and transport projects.
• Produce accurate AutoCAD drawings (layouts, sections, construction details, traffic management).
• Develop innovative design solutions for walking, cycling and road safety schemes.
• Manage budgets and programmes for schemes typically up to £1m.
• Coordinate site investigations and technical assessments to inform design.
• Provide technical advice on highway design, constructability and materials.
• Support stakeholder engagement with residents, elected members and internal teams.
• Undertake site visits to monitor progress and ensure delivery.
• Contribute to cost estimates, bills of quantities and work instructions.
• Ensure designs comply with current legislation and standards.
