Job summary

Southwark Council is seeking an Engineer - Minor Works to design and deliver highway projects focused on walking, cycling and public realm improvements within London. You will lead 2D design, manage schemes up to £300k, and provide construction support from feasibility through to delivery.

The role requires a degree in Civil/Highway/Transportation Engineering, strong AutoCAD skills, and experience in capital projects and public engagement. Occasional after-hours site visits are expected.

Qualifications

• A recognised degree in Civil Engineering, Highway Engineering, Transportation Engineering or a related discipline.
• Strong proficiency in AutoCAD for producing technical drawings.
• Experience managing capital projects through feasibility, design, consultation and delivery stages.
• Experience delivering highway and transport improvement schemes including junction upgrades, pedestrian crossings, cycle schemes, road safety projects and bus improvements.
• Knowledge of CDM requirements and design risk management principles.

Responsibilities

• Lead the design development of minor highway works schemes.
• Produce accurate AutoCAD drawings (general arrangements, layouts, sections, setting-out drawings, levels, construction details and traffic management plans).
• Manage project budgets and programmes for schemes typically valued up to £300k, while supporting larger transport programmes.
• Coordinate with internal teams, consultants and contractors to develop practical design solutions.
• Prepare technical reports, specifications, contract documentation and tender information.
• Support public consultations and stakeholder engagement activities.
• Undertake site visits, surveys and inspections to inform design and delivery decisions.
• Provide technical advice on highway design, constructability, materials and standards compliance.
• Support procurement processes and contractor management.
• Ensure projects comply with CDM 2015 and health and safety standards.
