Job description

A registered nurse who shares responsibility with the Transplant Co-Ordinator Team for the assessment of potential live donors and their recipients. The role involves co-ordinating living kidney donation (LKD) and living kidney transplant (LKT) for a diverse caseload of patients from Bristol and other renal units. The nurse facilitates entry of live donor pairs into the National Living Kidney Donor Sharing Scheme (NLKDSS) and communicates effectively with NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT), Human Tissue Authority (HTA), donors, and medical teams both nationally and internationally to support live donation processes.

Main duties of the job

  • Assess potential live donors and recipients in collaboration with the Transplant Co-Ordinator Team.
  • Coordinate the process of living kidney donation and transplantation for patients from various renal units.
  • Facilitate entry of donor pairs into the NLKDSS.
  • Provide education, expert advice, and support to patients, families, and staff regarding living kidney donation and transplantation.
  • Prepare and present live donation cases at weekly multidisciplinary team meetings, maintaining confidentiality and sensitivity.
  • Ensure smooth process from referral to post-donation follow-up, complying with statutory requirements and completing necessary tests.
  • Participate in a 1:5 on-call rota for deceased donor kidney offers, including weekends.

Person Specification

Registered Nurse

  • Minimum 2 years of nursing experience
  • Experience in acute hospital settings
  • BSc Hons Degree in Nursing
  • Recent renal nursing experience
  • Recent academic study at degree level
  • Intensive care or similar experience
  • Willingness to study or attend conferences
