Job description - the role

We partner with Arup to support contingent recruitment processes. On behalf of Arup, we are currently looking for a Transmission Design Engineer - Overhead Lines (275kV - 400kV).

We are seeking a Transmission Design Engineer - Overhead Lines (275kV - 400kV) for an initial 12-month contract, based in Birmingham, Nottingham, Sheffield, or Manchester.

Responsibilities
  • Seeking a candidate with developing experience within transmission and distribution, with working knowledge of PLS CADD/Tower for line design and broader CAD skills.
  • The successful candidate will have a background in EHV OHL design (33kV-400kV), supporting construction, procurement, and consultancy on various projects, with opportunities for professional development and recognition.
  • Experience may include:
  • Design of substation OHL equipment and line termination structures, and Cable Sealing Ends;
  • Design powerlines with PLS-CADD and towers with PLS-Tower;
  • Sag & tension calculations, Catenary Support System design, Line Profiling, Gantry analysis, Tower setting levels, Environmental loads, Insulator set design, Overhead Line Wire Clearance, Route plans, Material Quantification, Short Circuit Analysis;
  • Design of powerline structural foundations, including piled, pad, and rock-anchor foundations;
  • Leading and mentoring graduate and experienced engineers;
  • Investigation and remedial actions for damaged or corroded structures, including substation and powerline structures, foundation design, stays, anchors, and cross-arm design.

Additional responsibilities include preparing feasibility studies, technical reports, design drawings, technical specifications, and contributing to HAZID and risk reviews, applying safety by design principles in line with CDM responsibilities. The role involves working with CAD technicians, owning assigned tasks, providing project updates, highlighting risks, and interfacing with third parties. An understanding of IEC standards and technical specifications from clients like National Grid is essential.
