Overview

An exciting opportunity for a 12 month fixed term contract (Maternity Cover) based at the Royal London Hospital, within the East and South East London (ESEL) Pathology Network. We invite applications from suitably qualified and experienced Nurses, Biomedical Scientists Band 7 level, or a Band 6 already fulfilling a TP role or keen to move their career in that direction.

Responsibilities
  • Assist the Lead Transfusion Practitioner and other members of the Blood Transfusion management team in providing a comprehensive, cost‑effective, and high‑quality Blood Transfusion service to the Trust.
  • Represent Blood Transfusion for the Barts Health Trust, ESEL Pathology Partnership and external meetings as required; contribute to service improvement and facilitate delivery of current service provision across the Trust.
  • Education and training of Trust staff in clinical Blood Transfusion.
  • Develop and implement the Trust’s policies and procedures for Blood Transfusion.
  • Support statutory requirements (e.g., Health Service Circular 2007/001, NPSA Notice 14, Blood Safety and Quality Regulations 2005) and oversee Transfusion Clinical Governance by improving safety and effectiveness of blood transfusion practice and participation in Blood Transfusion audit.
  • Provide a link between the Blood Transfusion laboratory and clinical transfusion practice on the wards.
  • Work closely with the Lead Transfusion Practitioner, Lead Consultant Haematologist for blood transfusion, the blood transfusion laboratory; be a member of the Trust Transfusion Committee, Hospital Transfusion Committee and the Trust Transfusion Team.
Pathology Partnership context

The NHS East and South East London Pathology Partnership is an arms‑length organisation providing pathology services to Barts Health NHS Trust, Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. The Pathology Partnership is hosted by Barts Health.

  • The Pathology Partnership was formed in May 2021 and has established a single network of laboratories, underpinned by a single Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and single Quality Management System (QMS).
  • Core facilities include a main hub at the Royal London Hospital and Essential Service Laboratories (ESL) at six other hospital sites.
  • Three operational divisions: Blood Sciences (including Haematology, Blood Transfusion and Biochemistry), Microbiology and Virology, Cellular Pathology and Cancer Diagnostics.

The 2024/25 total operating costs across the Partnership were approximately £121m per annum with a workforce establishment of around 860 WTE.
