Job description

Job Title: Source Handler - West Midlands Police

Applications are invited from Constables for the position of Source Handler within the West Midlands Police Dedicated Source Unit. The role is based near Birmingham city centre, but applicants should be aware that they may be posted anywhere within the Force area and will be required to perform on-call duties.

Applicants must demonstrate the highest levels of integrity, communication, and report writing skills. A broad operational and investigative background, along with an understanding of the intelligence process, is essential. The role is challenging, rewarding, and carries significant responsibility.

Responsibilities include ensuring performance aligns with Force priorities, maintaining compliance with Standard Operating Procedures and legal requirements.

Key Accountabilities
  1. Recruit, develop, and handle covert human intelligence sources, ensuring compliance with legislation, policies, and authorisations to meet strategic priorities.
  2. Complete comprehensive risk assessments reflecting CHIS use circumstances, maintaining operational security.
  3. Implement cover stories and compromise strategies to maintain covert infrastructure, ensuring all meetings and contacts are correctly authorised per RIPA and codes of practice.
  4. Collate, evaluate, and sanitise information from sources to direct operational activity and ensure accurate reward and benefit applications.
Essential Skills
  • Successful completion of a DSU Handler portfolio.
  • Completion of CHIS course.
  • Successful training in the CHIS database.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Proficiency with police information systems and ICT skills.
  • Evidence of a broad and solid investigative background.
  • Willingness to undergo SC enhanced vetting as per force policy.
  • Availability to perform on-call duties via an on-call rota.
Desirable Skills
  • Experience in intelligence/information fields.
  • Knowledge of NIM and NPCC Guidance on Police Information Management (MOPI).
  • Familiarity with police systems, legislation, policies, and procedures such as RIPA, GDPR, Human Rights Act, CPIA.
Additional Requirements

Successful candidates will need to pass management vetting and security clearance, including a full background and financial disclosure. Medical checks, drug tests, and fitness assessments may also be required.

Selection Process

The process includes paper sift, assessment, interview, and SC enhanced vetting. Candidates will attend a three-week handler core skills course and may be subject to drug and alcohol testing.
