Job description

As a Trainee Sign Shop Technician, you will master the art of creating and installing signs using industry-recognised materials and techniques. You will become a safety expert, preparing and installing signing, lighting, and guarding in compliance with the Safety at Street Works and Road Works code of practice (Red Book), ensuring high safety standards. You will develop essential skills and gain a strong understanding of safe working practices to protect yourself and others. You will use electrical and mechanical tools to cut, shape, and assemble signs with precision. You will also learn to work independently, manage tasks efficiently, and maintain accurate records. The Sign Shop plays a crucial role in fabricating and installing traffic signs to ensure the safety and efficiency of transportation infrastructure. As part of the Highways Sign Shop team, you will contribute to delivering high-quality, responsive services.

About the role
  1. Possess a working knowledge of safe working practices to ensure health and safety.
  2. Learn to manufacture signs using industry-recognised materials and installation techniques.
  3. Prepare and install signing, lighting, and guarding in compliance with the Red Book.
  4. Participate in Sign Shop fabrication and installation, including emergency and winter services.
  5. Produce and fabricate signs according to Traffic Signs Regulations and G.D. 2002.
  6. Contribute to waste management, mobile working, and repair prioritisation.
  7. Fabricate signs and install them in accordance with ISO 9001 & CE Marking standards.
  8. Plan work to maximize productivity and keep accurate records.
  9. Use electrical and mechanical tools to cut, shape, and assemble signs.
  10. Collaborate with teams to resolve street environment issues.
Skills and qualities
  • Knowledge of safe working practices.
  • Sign manufacturing skills with industry-recognised materials.
  • Ability to prepare and install signs in compliance with safety regulations.
  • Ability to work independently, read maps, and understand traffic management plans.
  • Proficiency in machinery and tools, including operating power/hand tools.
