Job summary

Vistry Group is seeking a Trainee Quantity Surveyor to join our team, supporting cost management from procurement through final accounts across Northamptonshire developments. The role emphasizes in-person collaboration while offering flexible working where possible.

You will develop through completing an HNC/HND and degree, with focus on budget control, tender analysis, and sub-contract administration as part of a dynamic, values‑driven team.

Qualifications

• Strong mathematical and IT ability.
• Prepared to complete an HNC/HND and degree course as part of employment.
• Good understanding of budget management.
• Experience from placements with a building contractor or developer is beneficial.

Responsibilities

• Attend specification meetings to assist with site-specific requirements.
• Assist with tender packages for sub-contract trades.
• Receive tenders and analyse comparison sheets.
• Assist with issuing sub-contract orders to budget and programme requirements.
• Liaise with Build Department on sub-contractor performance and compliance.

More about the Trainee Quantity Surveyor role

• Attend specification meetings to assist with site specific specification requirements.
• Attend the site pre-start meeting to understand the construction issue drawings with the Senior / Quantity Surveyor.
• Assist with the compiling of tender packages for all sub-contract trades.
• Receive tenders and assist with the analysis sheet for each trade comparing tender levels.
• Assist with the issuing of sub-contract orders in accordance with Group Policy and Commercial Best Practice to budget and within programme requirements. Attend sub-contract pre-order meetings.
• Liaise with Build Department on sub-contractors’ performance and compliance with order conditions
• Assist with the production of sub-contract orders to accord with site programmed build requirements in accordance with Group Policy and Group Rebate schemes and fully adjudicate prior to issue of documentation.
• To liaise with the Quantity Surveyor / Senior Quantity Surveyor and provide all necessary forecast and site budget information to meet the business’s reporting requirements.
• Assist with the control and reporting of post contract cost movements to provide such monthly reporting as required by the Commercial Manager and or Managing Quantity Surveyor
• Ensure invoices/applications for payments are processed in accordance with the Conditions of Contract.
• Immediately advise management of notification of impending claim or legal action arising from a disputed claim or payment from a Sub-Contractor/Service Provider.
• Where necessary, determine a sub-contract order in accordance with Standard Terms and Conditions of Employment and liaise with Build Department in this respect.
• Assist in the regular review of materials on-site and material valuations.
• Ensure the collection of retention against all sub-contract orders in accordance with Group Policy. Assists with the certifying of retention releases on completion of the project.
• Assist with the preparation and agreement of sub-contract final accounts.
• Assist with maintaining final account schedules.
• Assist with formal site closedown procedures.
