Job summary

Mental Health Matters (MHM) in Tamworth is seeking a Trainee Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner to join Staffordshire Talking Therapies. You will train with Newman University while delivering NHS Talking Therapies interventions; split time between university, study and clinical practice.

The role involves screening referrals, assessments and delivering low-intensity CBT to adults with common mental health problems, with supervision throughout the training.

Qualifications

• Successful applicants will hold qualifications suitable for their chosen level of study.
• Postgraduate Certificate (M Level) qualification route or Graduate Certificate route with required A-levels.
• Relevant experience for clinical practice with adults experiencing mental health difficulties.

Hours of work: 37.5 hours per week
Salary: £28,392 per annum (NHS AFC Band 4)
Location: Staffordshire Talking Therapies - Tamworth, with a requirement to travel between Tamworth, Lichfield and Burntwood

About the role

We have an exciting opportunity for a Trainee Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner (TPWP) to join our established Staffordshire Talking Therapies service in Tamworth. Mental Health Matters (MHM) is committed to delivering high-quality mental health support to people in our local communities. As part of Staffordshire Talking Therapies, you will work alongside an experienced team delivering NHS Talking Therapies interventions to people experiencing common mental health difficulties, including depression and anxiety. This is an exciting training opportunity for someone who is passionate about mental health and would like to develop a career as a Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner. You will undertake a professional training programme delivered by Newman University in Birmingham, whilst gaining valuable clinical experience within the service. The role will involve splitting your time between university attendance, self-directed study and clinical practice. You will progressively learn how to deliver low-intensity cognitive behavioural interventions at high volume, working with people experiencing common mental health problems. As part of your clinical practice, you will support the screening and triaging of referrals, conduct assessments and provide a combination of face-to-face and remote low-intensity interventions. You will receive comprehensive support throughout your training, including clinical and caseload supervision. The training programme will consist of a minimum of 1 day of face-to-face university teaching, 1 day of self-directed study and 3 days of clinical practice each week. Successful applicants will be required to commence service induction on Monday 25 January 2027, in preparation for the university course commencing on Wednesday 3 February 2027. Please note that, once qualified, successful candidates will be required to seek BABCP or BPS accreditation.

To be successful in this role, you will be a highly organised and motivated individual with a genuine commitment to mental health and patient care. You will have:

• Experience of working with adults who have experienced common mental health difficulties.
• The ability to engage, inspire and motivate people.
• An understanding of client needs and the ability to identify potential barriers to engagement.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including strong telephone skills.
• The ability to evaluate and apply new skills and knowledge gained through training and development.
• The ability to work effectively as part of a team while managing your own responsibilities.
• A compassionate and person-centred approach to supporting people experiencing mental health difficulties.

Qualifications

Successful applicants will hold qualifications suitable for their chosen level of study:
Postgraduate Certificate (M Level) qualification route
A degree in a relevant subject or equivalent, such as Registered Nurses, Social Workers or Allied Health Professionals.
OR
Graduate Certificate route
2 Advanced Level GCEs at grades A-C or equivalent, such as BTEC, GNVQ, NVQ Level 3 or 4.
You must also have relevant experience necessary for clinical practice, including experience of working with adults who have experienced a mental health problem.
