Our BT Workplace team provides a full range of building maintenance services to their 7,000 buildings in the UK, including commercial offices, telephone exchanges, call centres, and retail shops.

The role: Trainee Principal Designer (Fixed Term Contract)

The role is suitable for someone from a Design or Health and Safety background looking to develop into the Principal Designer role. The focus is on the CDM Principal Designer; however, there will be opportunities to gain an understanding of the Building Safety Act Principal Designer. The ideal candidate will demonstrate knowledge of construction Health and Safety and have a good working knowledge of the CDM Regulations 2015.

It is expected that the candidate will understand and have experience working with Construction Phase Health and Safety Plans (CPPs), Preconstruction Information Packs (PCIPs), Risk Registers, and Health and Safety Files.

You will join a close-knit team of professionals working on various national construction projects. The role requires managing your own time to meet with stakeholders and handle workloads under the guidance of your regional manager. Travel within the UK is expected, primarily regionally, with periodic travel to London.

Key responsibilities include:
  1. Producing relevant CDM documentation.
  2. Supporting project delivery teams in managing construction design risk.
  3. Conducting site visits/audits to advise on Health and Safety improvements.
  4. Supporting the delivery of the CDM Principal Designer role.
  5. Driving improvements in supply chain Health and Safety.
  6. Supporting the wider QHSE team.
  7. Acting as a point of contact for project teams regarding CDM/Health and Safety matters.
Person Specification:
  • Experience in a similar role, ideally within construction.
  • Hold a NEBOSH Certificate or equivalent, preferably a member of IOSH.
  • Hold or be working towards an IMAPS or similar qualification.
  • Possess a current UK driving licence.
  • Good organisational skills.
  • Strong communication skills to engage with a broad range of stakeholders.
  • Drive and enthusiasm, with a willingness to learn, develop, and grow in the role.
