Job description
Overview

Trainee Biomedical Scientist - Haematology. Band 5. 12 months (Secondment). Full time - 37.5 hours per week. Location: Liverpool Clinical Laboratories (LUH site network).

Post may be offered under Annex 21 AfC Terms & Conditions, subject to experience, competency and suitability. The laboratory-based at the Royal Liverpool facility supports Clatterbridge Cancer Care Hospital Liverpool and regional Haematology services; other sites provide related services as described in the full job details.

The post holder will be expected to participate in the out of hours shift pattern supporting a 24-hour analytical service. Some knowledge of theoretical and practical Haematology procedures is required; you should be able to work with initiative and demonstrate good interpersonal, communication and problem-solving skills.

Main duties of the job
  • Undertake training to support the operational functionality of laboratory areas including calibrating, maintaining and operating complex analytical equipment.
  • Regularly review internal quality control and external quality assurance data trends.
  • Validate analytical data prior to result reporting and select/provision suitable blood and blood products.
  • Work with LIMS and other IT systems and contribute to Quality Management Systems.
  • Work as part of the team to provide and develop a high-quality diagnostic service.
  • Operate in a UKAS ISO 15189:2022 accredited department and IBMS training laboratory.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will gain experience and achieve technical competence in all areas of laboratory work under supervision to become a Specialist State Registered Biomedical Scientist (B6). They will routinely perform in-depth investigations of clinical specimens, including high-risk specimens, and undertake a range of interpretative analyses.
