Job summary

Northern Powergrid is hiring an Operational Technology Systems Engineer to support the ADMS and OT platforms that run the electricity network across the region. You will help maintain, troubleshoot and improve critical OT applications while coordinating with engineers and external suppliers.

The role offers a structured development path with a training programme to progress to full engineer status, and a 25-day holiday entitlement.

Qualifications

  • Minimum HNC / Level 4 qualification in a relevant subject.
  • Full UK Driving Licence.
  • Experience in OT or regulated environments is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Support and develop ADMS and OT systems used to manage the electricity network.
  • Assist with incident resolution and service requests under guidance from senior colleagues.
  • Carry out basic system administration tasks and monitor system performance.
  • Support software upgrades and lifecycle activities.
  • Maintain awareness of OT cyber security requirements and access controls.
  • Contribute to technical documentation and procedures.
  • Participate in training to expand knowledge of electricity network operations.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Operational Technology Systems Engineer to join Northern Powergrid's Digital & Innovation team.

As the company responsible for delivering power to approximately 8 million customers across the Northeast, Yorkshire and northern Lincolnshire, we rely on critical Operational Technology systems to monitor, control and manage the electricity network every second of every day. Our Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS) is at the heart of these operations, providing the real-time intelligence and control capabilities that enable our Control Engineers to safely and efficiently operate the network.

As an Operational Technology Systems Engineer, you will be responsible for supporting, maintaining and developing the critical applications and supporting technologies that underpin the operation of the electricity network. Working across a diverse range of systems, you will help ensure the availability, performance, security and resilience of the platforms used to manage power supplies for millions of homes and businesses. You will play a vital role in delivering system enhancements, supporting major projects, investigating complex technical issues and helping to drive the digital transformation of our operational environment.

Along with a competitive salary of between £44,529 - £51,413 we also offer great benefits such as:

The successful candidate will be subject to SC-level National Security Vetting. Candidates will be required to have lawfully resided in the UK for a minimum of 5 years to support security clearance processes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Work as part of the Northern Powergrid Operational Technology team, supporting the maintenance and development of the ADMS system.
  • Assist with the day-to-day support of Operational Technology systems, helping to resolve incidents and service requests under guidance from experienced colleagues.
  • Learn and carry out basic system administration and configuration tasks, including workstation support, system monitoring, connectivity checks, and supporting outage activities.
  • Help investigate and troubleshoot issues relating to external system interfaces and data exchanges.
  • Support application testing, software upgrades, and system lifecycle activities.
  • Maintain an awareness of Operational Technology cyber security requirements, access controls, and good security practices.
  • Assist in maintaining technical documentation, procedures, and records.
  • Participate in training and development activities to build knowledge of the electricity network operations and Operational Technology systems.
  • Interest in technology, engineering, or electricity network operations, with a willingness to learn.
  • Basic understanding of IT, Operational Technology, or industrial control system environments.
  • Good problem-solving skills and a methodical approach to troubleshooting.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and learn from experienced colleagues.
  • Strong communication skills and confidence when working with internal teams and external suppliers.
  • Good organisational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities.
  • Ability to follow documented processes, procedures, and safety requirements.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office applications and technical systems would be beneficial.
  • Willingness to develop technical knowledge through training, mentoring, and hands-on experience.
