Due to continued and sustained growth, an exciting opportunity has come up for a Trainee Mechanical and Electrical Estimator to join our company, JH Mechanical and Electrical Services (JH-ME).

The Trainee M&E Estimator role is new to the company and provides and exciting opportunity for the right candidate to join the projects team and play a key role in helping to source, price and secure the pipeline of works for our company, JH Mechanical and Electrical Services (JH-ME).
The role would suit a recent graduate with a HNC/ HND / Degree in a relevant engineering discipline; such as electrical/building services/ mechanical engineering, and who would like to the opportunity to learn from an experienced estimator and the wider project team in how to price, secure and run new work, whilst at all times mitigating the risk to the company in relation to these works.
This is a 2-year trainee role. In year 1 you can expect to learn and develop the skills required to become an M&E Estimator, utilising and building on the knowledge you have acquired from your engineering course; you will be in expert hands and will be fully supported by the estimating team at JH-ME.
Year 2 will see you working with increasing independence within the team, leading on pricing and securing smaller projects – particularly electrical works – as well as working increasingly on larger M&E projects under the guidance and tutelage of the Estimating Manager.
After successfully completing your training, you will progress to become an independent M&E Estimator at our company.
The Ideal Candidate
- A self-starter, with a keen willingness to progress and learn from a highly proficient estimating team at JH-ME
- A solid technical background in engineering, to HNC/HND/degree level
- An electrical bias would be beneficial, but not essential
- Highly organised, with attention to detail, high levels of accuracy and precision and the ability to meet tight deadlines is required
- Ability to read and understand drawings and technical designs and detailed specifications
- Excellent numeracy and excel skills is required
- High level of computer literacy is required
- Excellent communication skills is required
The Interview Process
Interviews will be held week commencing 14th July 2025 and will be held at our offices on Teesside Industrial Estate, and we expect to appoint into the role with a start date of 1st September 2025. The interview itself will be in two parts: we will ask you to prepare and deliver a short 10-minute presentation at the start of the interview which will be based on a topic provided to you in advance, and this will be followed by a Q&A session.
We appreciate interviews can be quite daunting, but we will do our best to make you feel at ease and to hopefully help you think about your future career path into estimating and how JH-ME can hopefully help you with that! You will also have the opportunity to ask us any questions you may have about the position during the interview too.
Key Duties
Year 1 - In this year you will support the Estimating Manager in his duties by learning how to undertake the following:
- Read drawings and specifications and undertake take offs to price work
- Risk assess project specific contract terms to advise the management team
- Secure quotes and best value from suppliers, and research products to ensure they meet specifications
- Price works and ensure they are profitable
- Review all relevant tender portals (ie: NEUPC, In-tend, Proactis etc) for work opportunities and brief management accordingly
- Review tenders won/lost and gain commercial awareness of our competitors and their pricing strategies
- Understand and apply the National Schedule of Rates (NSR)
- Attend and undertake site visits
- Learn to build relationships with clients and suppliers
- Design O&M Manuals and provide them to clients
- Set up leads, quotes and jobs on our CRM system, ensuring all cost centres, pricing and estimated hours are recorded accurately
- Quarterly review of performance and guidance will be given
- Undertake any training and development deemed necessary by the directors for you to fulfil your duties
- Any other duties deemed relevant for the role
At the end of year 1 we will review your performance and set new objectives for the year ahead, which will feed into your training plan for your second year.
Duties
Year 2 - In this year you will start to work with increasing independence on all elements learned in year 1, plus undertake additional duties, including the following:
- Price independently within an agreed scope / pricing range
- Ensure best value on materials purchased for projects by briefing the project leads prior to ordering
- Assist in developing an improved system for quoting staff to access the National Schedule of rates and support the team in their application
- Undertake independent site visits and surveys on behalf of the company to assist in the quotation of work
- Read drawings/project and contract terms and conditions and brief management on the opportunities and risks associated with the potential works to be tendered
- Oversee and ensure the effective handover of works secured to Project Managers; ensuring works specification, timeframes for delivery, H&S matters, financial drawdown profiles, specific client expectations/instructions and sign off procedures are effectively communicated
- Support Project Managers in producing quotes and securing orders for additional works
- Support Project Managers in undertaking pre-start meetings with the client
- Support Project Managers in negotiating project contracts to mitigate contract risks to the company
- Support Project Managers in setting up a programme of works for projects
- Support Project Managers in setting clear targets for the projects to be undertaken and brief staff on the works to be done
- Network independently with suppliers and clients (under some supervision) on behalf of the company
- Support the management team with the retention of existing clients and continuous growth of the business
- Undertake any training and development deemed necessary for you to fulfil your duties
- Any other duties deemed relevant for the role
- Quarterly review of performance and guidance will be given
What You Need To Apply
- HNC/HND/Degree in Electrical, Mechanical or Building Services Engineering
- You must pass a DBS / NPPV level 2 police checks during your 6-month probationary period (the company undertake these on your behalf)
- Provide a reference from your current college course lecturer / employer, or a personal reference from a person working in a professional field (ie: police, fire, NHS, schoolteacher OR college/university lecturer)
- A full UK driving licence would be desirable but not essential
Salary and other information
- Starting Salary is £30,000.
- Expected Salary after completing 2 years of training is £40,000
- Working hours are 40 hours per week (hours can be taken between 7.30am-5pm but must align with work/job commitments and staff
- management responsibilities appropriately and adaptability is required at busy times as the company requires).
- Holiday allowance is 25 days per year, plus bank holidays
