We are seeking dedicated professionals like you with a passion for delivering evidence-based treatments in Substance Use to join our friendly team in Exeter and make a meaningful impact on people's lives, their families, and communities.

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Independent Prescriber to join our dynamic healthcare team. The ideal candidate will possess advanced clinical skills, a strong knowledge of pharmacology, and the ability to autonomously assess, diagnose, and manage patient care. This role involves collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to deliver exceptional patient outcomes and ensure the highest standards of care.

If you are not currently an Independent Prescriber but are enthusiastic to train as one, we will provide the training and all the support you will need.

Job responsibilities
  1. Conduct clinical assessments with or without prescribing medications (including controlled drugs) to support recovery, following national and organizational guidelines.
  2. Prescribe cost-effectively, provide prescribing advice to pharmacists, GPs, and hospital staff.
  3. Undertake service user assessments, care planning, monitoring, and reviews in various settings.
  4. Manage Blood Borne Virus (BBV) risks, testing, immunizations, and counseling.
  5. Deliver health promotion and harm reduction interventions, such as safer sex, contraception, nutrition, and healthy living.
  6. Promote and deliver hepatitis B immunizations per national guidance.
  7. Maintain client clinical databases, ensuring data security and accurate reporting.
  8. Coordinate with pharmacists on prescription queries and supervised dispensing.
  9. Share care responsibilities with GPs for primary care service users.
  10. Deliver clinical interventions across multiple locations and outreach services.
  11. Participate in professional development, clinical supervision, and training.
  12. Work in compliance with legislation, policies, and clinical governance standards.
  13. Participate in audits, implement findings, and promote service improvements.
  14. Report serious incidents, including deaths, and implement necessary changes.
  15. Disseminate learning and support other services during mobilization.
  16. Collaborate on policy review and clinical governance initiatives.
  17. Engage in research projects and stay updated on professional developments.
  18. Uphold organizational values of honesty, commitment, and inventiveness.
Person Specification
Qualifications
  • First-level registered nurse or pharmacist
  • RCGP Qualification Level 1 (or willingness to obtain Levels 1 and 2)
Experience
  • Delivering evidence-based treatments in substance misuse
  • Conducting health assessments, including BBV, and providing health promotion
  • Understanding social contexts of drug misuse and wider implications
  • Knowledge of primary healthcare complexities and opportunities
  • Experience with clinical audits and understanding of public and voluntary sector drug services
  • Awareness of national strategies affecting drug and alcohol services
