Our client is a highly innovative and diverse grower of a wide range of salad and speciality vegetable crops based in the garden of England in Kent. Due to their ongoing development, they are now seeking an ambitious and capable Trainee Farm Manager to join their growing team.

The Farm Management Trainee is specifically accountable to the Farm Manager for:

  • Carrying out daily tasks to enhance their knowledge of fresh produce production methods, aiming to become an effective manager within Watts Farms.
  • Developing key skills such as people, soil, crop, and time management through on-the-job training.
  • Providing additional management in areas requiring focus.
  • Expanding their knowledge through background reading and research.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

In respect of the above, a Farm Management Trainee is specifically responsible for:

  1. Undertaking and supervising ground work, fertilisation, drilling/planting, irrigation, or crop protection practices as advised by the Farm Manager to grow crops according to the annual programme.
  2. Supervising and managing harvest teams, weeding gangs, and other labour-intensive areas to keep costs minimal and quality high.
  3. Supervising mechanised harvest of spinach and herbs, ensuring cost efficiency and quality.
  4. Growing and managing a small trial area, and writing reports on seed densities, variety descriptions, and crop emergence.
  5. Ensuring the safe use and proper condition of plant and equipment, reporting any issues to the Farm Manager.
  6. Monitoring all costs as requested and collaborating with the Farm Manager to identify cost reduction methods.
  7. Monitoring yields and using this data to develop availability skills.
  8. Liaising with the Technical Manager regarding internal and external audits.
  9. Carrying out office work such as traceability recording and cost monitoring.
  10. Exposing themselves to various areas of the business, crops, and operations to broaden their learning.
  11. Undertaking other tasks beneficial to the business or personal development, such as covering staff absences and attending training days.
  12. Keeping a diary of their learning experiences for reference and development.
