Job Purpose

An exciting opportunity has become available within the Be U Swindon Mental Health Support Team for a Trainee Education Mental Health Practitioner (EMHP). The employment-based training role within the forming part of NHSE, HEE and DOH initiative is to expand the mental health workforce offering support to children and young people at a stage of early intervention. The successful post-holder will work within Be U Swindon as part of a multidisciplinary team delivering, under supervision, high-quality; outcome-informed, focused, evidence-based interventions for children and young people experiencing mild to moderate anxiety, low mood and behavioural difficulties. The training and service experience will equip the post holder with the necessary knowledge, attitude and capabilities to operate effectively from a values driven context within the wider service. The post holder will attend all university-based taught and self-study days required by the education provider, as specified within the agreed curriculum and work in the service for the remaining days of the week using their newly developed skills.

On successful completion of the trainee EMHP course, which is a full-time role funded at NHS Band 4 or equivalent you will be able to achieve a band 5 or equivalent position within the team.

Duties And Responsibilities

The role involves assessing and delivering, under supervision, outcome-focused and evidence-based interventions for children and young people experiencing mild to moderate mental health difficulties. You will work in partnership with young people, their families, and educational settings to support self-management, develop intervention plans, and empower informed decision-making. Operating from an inclusive values base that recognises and respects diversity, you will conduct accurate risk assessments and adhere to service referral protocols, signposting unsuitable referrals when necessary. Through close case management and supervision, you will escalate cases where needs become more complex, ensuring appropriate service delivery. The role includes providing a range of information and support for evidence-based psychological treatments, which may be delivered face-to-face, by telephone, or other media. You will maintain an agreed activity level to improve access and reduce waiting times, attend multi-disciplinary meetings, keep accurate records, and use outcome data to inform decisions. Additionally, you will integrate considerations of transitions, education, and employment into therapeutic processes, collaborate with relevant professionals, and work alongside educational partners to enhance service accessibility. The role also includes providing support for whole school and college approaches, delivering evidence-based group work, offering universal psychoeducation, targeted group interventions, and supporting the development of educational staff.

Training And Supervision

The post holder will be required to attend and complete all elements of the training programme, including practical, academic, and practice-based assessments, while maintaining full attendance and engagement in line with training provider expectations. Learning from the training programme will be applied directly to practice, ensuring continuous development of knowledge and skills. Supervision will be provided by educational providers to support academic requirements, while regular case load presentations to service supervisors will ensure safe practice and fulfil governance responsibilities. The successful candidate will be expected to respond to supervision feedback, implementing suggestions to enhance practice, and engage in personal development supervision to continually improve competencies and clinical effectiveness.

The post holder will be expected to maintain high standards of practice in line with employer policies and relevant regulatory bodies, staying up-to-date with new guidelines and recommendations. Confidentiality must be upheld at all times. Clear professional objectives will be regularly identified, discussed, and reviewed with supervisors and senior colleagues as part of ongoing professional development. The successful candidate will participate in individual performance reviews, respond to agreed objectives, and ensure all Continuous Professional Development (CPD) records and personal development plans are kept up to date, maintaining current knowledge of theoretical advancements and service delivery models. Attendance at relevant conferences and workshops will be encouraged to support professional growth and meet identified objectives.
