Is this role for you?

We are looking for motivated people who can bring interest, reliability and a strong work ethic to our Trainee Craftsperson Programme. You'll already have experience working in an industrial, engineering, utility, construction, electrical, or similar operational environment and will recognise the importance of safety, teamwork, and delivering high-quality work.

These roles can be physically demanding and may involve working outdoors at heights, in varying weather conditions, and across operational sites. As such, you'll need a good level of physical fitness and a willingness to work in a practical, hands-on environment.

To be successful, you'll need to demonstrate the drive and focus to develop new technical skills and complete a structured programme of learning. This includes attendance at mandatory technical training courses scheduled throughout the approximately five-month training period. Applicants must be available for this period in full, as successful completion of the training is an essential requirement of the programme.

Where you'll be working

Our energy landscape is going through a time of profound change. This shift affects every part of our society, and we need to eradicate carbon emissions to halt the effects of climate change. We need to change how we live our lives and replace the use of fossil fuels for transport and heat.

Electricity will be at the heart of the solution, through electric vehicles and heat pumps. And with more renewables generation and other technologies integrated into the electricity grid than ever before, it’s our role to make sure we create a more efficient, cleaner, greener network to accommodate this increase in demand.

Within SP Energy Networks, we are focusing on harnessing technology and innovation to create the networks of the future. With distribution networks designed for predictable, stable demand, it’s vital we upgrade our network to create the flexibility required to cope with the extensive changes to electricity demand, generation and consumer behaviour. Through technology and innovation, we will enable a consumer-led revolution in the use and operation of our system. It will undergo the biggest changes to its design and operation for over half a century and you can be part of it.

You’ll find more information about SP Energy Networks, including details of our current projects, on our website.

What you'll be doing

To achieve Net Zero as early as 2030, it’s crucial that we facilitate significant increases in Electric Vehicle (EV), heat pump and renewable generation demand to enable the decarbonisation of heat and transport. To do this, we urgently need Electrical Fitters, Cable Jointers and Overhead Lineworkers to join our business. You’ll find more information on our trades, here.

The Trainee Craftsperson programme provides hands-on experience in the installation and maintenance of power infrastructure and delves deep into the intricacies of renewable energy technologies. It offers a unique opportunity to enter the exciting world of energy networks, allowing participants to learn and grow in a dynamic and rapidly evolving industry. We’ll equip you with the skills and knowledge necessary to excel in the energy sector.

Our trainee programme is designed to build on your existing skills from other industries, combining technical, academic and on-the-job training. Not only will you study towards a nationally recognised qualification, but you will also earn a salary, develop new skills and gain invaluable knowledge and experience. It offers exceptional training opportunities for those who want to enhance their existing skills or explore new opportunities through retraining.

Positions are available in the below areas.

  • Merseyside - Liverpool
  • Mid-Cheshire - Middlewich

We will be holding Assessment Centre days at our Dealain & Hoylake Training Centres between 7 and 11 December.

You’ll need to be available from 10 May 2027 and maintain continuous attendance at your training courses for approximately five months.

What's in it for you

As a Trainee Craftsperson, you’ll enjoy a range of benefits including:

  • Starting salary of £30,630 as above
  • A generous pension scheme where we’ll double match your contributions up to 10%
  • A broad range of flexible benefits including, employee discounts, charity matched funding and many, many more.

Upon completion of the Trainee Craftsperson Trainee Programme, you’ll become a qualified Craft professional achieving either:

  • Diploma in Electrical Power Engineering
  • Certificate in Power Networks Craftsperson

What you'll bring

You’ll have experience working within an industrial or electrical environment (or similar) where adherence to health and safety policies is vital.

There are many different past work experiences that are suitable, however, some examples include:

  • Groundworks
  • Plumbing
  • Electrical roles
  • Operating and maintaining military communications equipment
  • Former military roles
  • General building or construction work, such as groundwork, dumper driving, digger driving or pipe laying
  • Joinery or fitting roles
  • Warehouse production roles
  • Warehouse forklift truck driving
  • Skilled roads operations involving high-powered tools
  • Mechanical roles

We place a strong emphasis on health and safety, so experience in this area is crucial. Additionally, a driving licence is essential as you will be required to travel to various sites both during and after your training period.

As an Electrical Fitter or Cable Jointer, you’ll need to be comfortable working in confined spaces. As an Overhead Linesworker, you’ll be comfortable climbing and working at heights. If you already have experience in either of these trades, there may be opportunities to reduce the duration of the training period accordingly.

Join us now and collectively, we can create a world that is safer, more efficient and more sustainable for generations to come.
