South West London & St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust is committed to hosting high-quality research. The Clinical Research Unit based at Barnes Hospital (temporarily based in Teddington) serves a Trust-wide research portfolio in observational and interventional Phase II-IV trials. We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic Trainee Clinical Research Trials Assistant to join the Team and support our work on National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) Portfolio studies. This post provides a great opportunity for the successful candidate to gain experience in clinical research delivery, work together with other researchers in the Team, recruit participants and carry out clinical and psychometric assessments. As part of this role, the candidate would be expected to support our clinical research delivery team with the screening, identification, and recruitment participants into NIHR clinical research studies, and support the research delivery team across all areas of the Trust NIHR research portfolio. This may involve cross-site working. The post will be for 6 months fixed term in the first instance.

About our locations:

The post will be based in the R&D Office located at Springfield University Hospital, with cross-site working across the Clinical Research Unit (CRU) located at Barnes Hospital (temporarily in Teddington) and Tolworth Hospital.

Core Responsibilities
1. Develop knowledge of the ethical principles for clinical research and its implications for
current practice.
2. As a member of the R&D team, s/he will be responsible for the provision of robust
operational support in all aspects of clinical trials administration according to Good
Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines, local standard operating procedures (SOPs) and
other relevant SWLStG policies.
3. Be responsible for his/her own personal and professional development, ensuring that
all relevant skills and training (e.g. GCP) remaining up-to-date to carry out all jobrelated responsibilities.
4. Help to identify mental health service users and carers who are eligible to take part in
a range of research projects and to provide information and support for users involved
in research projects.
5. Help to collect data, which will involve reviewing electronic medical records and data
entry.
6. Help to recruit patients into observational research studies, through screening records,
assisting to recruit participants, and participate in the follow-up and completion of
relevant trial-specific paperwork.
7. Post holder will ensure that patients’ care and treatment, assessments, follow-up and
data collection are conducted according to the appropriate research protocols.
