Job description

To undertake the role of trainee clinical coder for clinical groups or specialties as appropriate, abstracting information from patient case notes and other sources, and assigning suitable codes onto the Trust’s patient administration system under supervision and guidance.

Participate in an ongoing supervised training period to acquire coding knowledge and expertise. Attend training sessions as necessary, maintaining up-to-date reference and standards manuals aligned with national guidance.

Progression: Upon completing competencies and passing internal assessments, you will progress to Band 4, which is expected to take up to 24 months.

  • Abstract inpatient and day case diagnoses and surgical procedures from case notes and electronic systems, inputting data into the patient administration system under supervision.
  • Participate in supervised training to develop coding knowledge and expertise.
  • Attend training sessions, which may involve travel to other sites in the West Midlands area.
  • Successfully complete internal and external assessments.
  • Gain knowledge of anatomy and physiology through online and face-to-face training.
  • Stay updated with national and local coding rules and conventions.
  • Support the Deputy Head of Clinical Administration in communication and policy implementation.
  • Participate in presentations to stakeholders within Performance and Informatics when required.
  • Develop good working relationships within the Trust and with external agencies.
  • Maintain security and confidentiality, adhering to GDPR and Caldicott principles.
